Glasgow problems - BT are you out there!

Connection in Glasgow well to put it mildly –Crap and all I’m try to do is browse the web….. went on to BF2 PR and my ping was 1280 in a server I usually get 19-32…..they all seemed bad thus conclusion its my end…

If they cant get a service that provide basic web access its time for them to give up the ghost…..I’ve only got Virgin as my ISP now as I dropped there TV and phone service for SKY. If things don’t get better BT will be getting asked to provide for me…..

Anyone else in glasgow the same?

G20 rocks... On ADSL though...

What's your throughput on 20Mbit?

Can you give us a speed test result?

Re: Glasgow problems - BT are you out there!

Hmm, Still quicker than ADSL although its not exactly 20mbps more like 10...

Here's what i got on the same test via my Sky Broadband...

Thu, 31 May 2007 16:51:30 GMT

1st 512K took 718 ms = 713.1 KB/sec, approx 5876 Kbps, 5.74 Mbps
2nd 512K took 687 ms = 745.3 KB/sec, approx 6141 Kbps, 6 Mbps
3rd 512K took 714 ms = 717.1 KB/sec, approx 5909 Kbps, 5.77 Mbps
4th 512K took 695 ms = 736.7 KB/sec, approx 6070 Kbps, 5.93 Mbps

Quite consistent, but i'd be ****ed if i was you and was being promised 20mbps.

Re: Glasgow problems - BT are you out there!

Insanely crap speeds here in PA3. 4MB service and its taking an age to browse the web. Getting <100kb/s on torrents when I usually get 300-400.

Re: Glasgow problems - BT are you out there!

Speed tests do not give accurate results. If I download a torrent with plenty of seeds it is reaching 20mb (2.1Mb/s).

Browsing, however, is another story.

Re: Glasgow problems - BT are you out there!

G73 - Renfrew UBR.

Modem tells me I'm on 20mb but speed tests and downloads tell a different picture.

Sat, 2 Jun 2007 13:43:45 UTC

1st 512K took 1421 ms = 360.3 KB/sec, approx 2969 Kbps, 2.9 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1016 ms = 503.9 KB/sec, approx 4152 Kbps, 4.05 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2266 ms = 225.9 KB/sec, approx 1861 Kbps, 1.82 Mbps
4th 512K took 2250 ms = 227.6 KB/sec, approx 1875 Kbps, 1.83 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2714 Kbps, 2.65 Mbps

I've also tried connecting the modem directly to the PC in case it was my router but exactly the same results.

Last night I did manage to get over 10mb but only just.

What's going on?

Re: Glasgow problems - BT are you out there!

Getting seriously p*ssed off with the degradation in what was a previously great service from ntl. Web browsing can be painfully slow with timeouts and images which fail to load.

Downloads from Giganews europe server used to max out the connection but are very poor since the move to 20Mbit.

FTP connections show abysmal speeds, especially from USA. try connecting to one of the fast fedora archive mirror sites here via an FTP client and check your sustained download speed:
Fast Mirror Archive Listing
I'm getting a max of 200K d/l from USA sites with a 2Gbps fat pipe which is 10% of my expected throughput on a 20Mbit virginmedia line UK tops out at 900k which is less than 50%
