File servers

Is it just me, or do file servers seem to be getting slower these days?

As I type this I'm currently downloading a trial version of Nero. Downloading with a single connection yields ~30-40k download speeds, now with 4 I get 90-160k.

Downloads.com has developed some kind of grudge against me recently too, as a single connection will usually yield 18k max from them, there are many other reputable file servers I could mention too.

Yet I know there is nothing wrong with my connection, Usenet will still blaze away at full speeds, even the dreaded "T-word" runs proverbial rings around these things.

So are they getting slower, or do they just not like me..

Re: File servers

Probably as connections are getting faster they're not bothering to upgrade capacity...

Your best bet is to use different mirrors etc, i find most places like sourceforge give best speeds from Germany, Norway and Sweden etc...

They do seem to be getting slower mind

Nero site yields about 300 - 400k on multi-threaded download. It's pants.

i think recently the mirrors are not the problem but Virgin Media messing about with the technology that provides your connection to the world...what with the upgrades that have been going on around the country

Re: File servers

Thats why I started this thread, I'm fed up of having a 10Meg connection, and only able to download at 250KBs

Re: File servers

You can't have a single download at maximum speed, but you can have multiple downloads that will top your connection

The preferable is to get the maximum of your speed one way or another
