A start may be to ask yourself why pay what you are paying for supposed speed when 4mb is £25 per month
I like many share your frustration, but what are vm doing about it?
Talking about increasing speeds when their existing network cannot handle what they are supposed to provide for the subs they are taking.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
Oh, sh*t!
Well, it's finally happened. Our area has been downgraded to 20Mb and STM has been implemented.
I'm on a lowly 2Mb line and have just had my nuts squeezed, or so it seems, after a pleasant evening of viewing Xbox360 game trailers and coverage from E3. My d/l dropped to 1Mb, and u/l to a little over 120Kb, so there can be little doubt. I'm very unhappy and feel violated. I've done nothing out of the ordinary but feel extremely short-changed. I agree there is a possible need for some kind of metering, but the limits VM have set are extremely low, considering the media-centric content on a lot of websites. It is the heavy users who soak up the bandwidth, not people like me. OK, I pay half the price but receive well below half the service of the 20Mb speed-freaks. I know VM hope this will encourage people to upgrade to a higher teir, but in all honesty, it does discriminate against those on a budget.
It's a sad day for me I'm off to shoot some aliens and release a little tension.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
Hey,
Is anyone else having troubles with their line after the shaping kicks in? My 4MB is usually rock solid and speedy, but tonight I have knowingly broken the peak download limit and the line has just gone to ****. Random dropouts every few minutes and painfully slow when it is working. Is this supposed to happen when you get capped? It's happened a couple of times before (where I may have exceeded the cap, but not absolutely sure).
Cheers,
Suman

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
OK, after reading and searching about 10 pages my eyes are starting to hurt.
So I'll jump right in:
1. Is this shaping thing permenant? If I get capped one day, will I always get capped every other day?
2. Can I get capped any more than from 2mb to 1mb? I mean, if I'm capped already I might as well keep downloading whatever I was downloading right?
If these questions have been answered already, sorry Its late and I can't find them.

If you download more than your aloud limit between 4pm and midnight you will get traffic shaped to what it says on their webpage.
You can keep downloading what you are downloading but at the shaped speed. After 4 hours from when the shaping kicked in your speed should return to normal.
Another day is another day so repeat all of the above.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
So getting capped one night has no effect on any other days?
You see, I'm very happy with my capped-to-1mb connection. Its far better than the supposedly 2mb Tiscali ADSL one that I used to have, I don't think it ever went above 1mb, and during peak hours it randomly disconnected and slowed down to about 100kbps.

Your speed won't be moderated unless you're in the top 5% of downloaders. Our boffins recently ran a trial to see how much our service was being affected. They discovered that, in certain areas, just 5% of customers were downloading such a large amount of content that it was affecting the service for other users in these areas.
And we're not talking about just a few video clips. In some cases the top 5% of users were downloading as much as 3GB, just during peak times. That's around 750 music tracks in the space of a few hours.
So, unless you're downloading an unusually large amount of information at peak times, we won't restrict your service and you can download to your heart's content.

I see.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
I have a question regarding the supposed poor service in an area after the 20Mb rollout (I won't call it an 'upgrade' for obvious reasons)...
I mentioned yesterday that I had fallen victim to the STM policy for the first time and checked that our area was now on 20Mb. It is.
By simply by enabling the STM policy in a particular area do users on all tiers experience performance problems over and above the shaped speeds?
I am experiencing very high ping times that I've never really seen before and it seems a coincidence that this happens after the 20Mb rollout.
Pings to UK and Euro servers are ~75ms, east-US are ~170ms and west-US ~215ms. My d/l and u/l speeds seem fine at ~2000 kps and ~240 kbps.
Are high pings related to the problems VM give themselves when doing the 20Mb switch?
Cheers

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
Bah - just started to get shaped. Pathetic really, and I had only downloaded about 60MB. The PC had been off all day.
I'm going to call Virgin tomorrow and complain. My line is broken.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
Has anybody noticed that torrents/any p2p has started being shaped, resulting you only getting 2kb/s from every peer...no matter how many peers/seeds there is? sort of amusing.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
Hey guys I wanted to know if this was correct without starting a new thread. Over the last couple of days I have been trafic shaped, where my download speed barely goes over 1megabit, and upload drags around the 690kilobit mark. As you may have guessed I am on 20megabit so my question is, am I going to have to get used to this even though I have not used my allowance as yet?? For the record my speed is now 19123 kilobit this morning download via wireless
