Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
Does anyone know what clocks VM run on for traffic shaping?
Its 12:35am and i'm still very clearly being shaped.
They are always very quick to turn it on come 4pm, but not so quick to turn it off.
Or is it a case that if you download your allowance just prior to 12am that you are penalised for another 4 hours outside their so-called peak hours and only can return to full speed at 4am?

I think the enboldened text is the correct procedure.

What a joke...
I'd like to hear someone from VM explain to me that 3:55am is a peak time that needs to be traffic managed.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
Realistically it should be that STM cuts off a midnite but VM's either:
- too lazy
- too stupid
- don't care

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
If the STM cut off at midnight you would be able to download 3GB just prior to midnight without it affecting you which would have the effect of making the STM 4:00pm to <12:00pm

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
I'd also like VM to explain how that if I download 750 meg during peak time (i'm on 4 meg), i'm having a detrimental effect on their network, but if I give them another 13 quid, then suddenly I need to download another 2.25 gig to suddenly have a detrimental effect on the network.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
TBH, my feeling with the thresholds is that they know there are a lot of 4meg users who are happy with 4 meg but use a higher amount of total bandwidth (I'm one of them!). The thresholds have always seemed like a way of trying to bump more people into the higher packager - not because they want the speed but because they want the bandwidth. At that point VM have increased their revenue without any additional costs to themselves.

I agree, but that doesn't help the UBRs cope with the traffic during peak times. I could still download at max speed before midnite and then be on STM when no one is using the connection. It's a half baked policy. Realistically, peak is between 6-10pm. They added 2hrs each way just to be safe and then an extra 4hrs penalty because, let's be realistic, anyone that watches Joost, BBC online etc will always go over their limit at some point at night and probably be limited til 2-4am.

That is exactly the reason I upped my 4meg to 20. Tho they only got an extra £4 out of me so the way I see it, it's £4 for the extra upload bandwidth, which is not really a bad deal.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
Not sure if this has been mentioned but i got traffic shaped at 4GB and not 3GB just now, so maybe they're tweaking it. I'm in Cambridge CB4 and on 20mbit.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
i've been traffic shaped every day or night in newcastle upon tyne without downloading a thing, got my new scientific atlanta modem today exactly the same acting like 5mb cap put on it with huge latency spikes still happening between the traffic shaping hours. so that post about motorola or atlanta modems being unnaffected is bull so is the myth that its just ex-ntl'rs having probs im ex telewest so glad i phoned and got cut off then emailed them about disconnecting on monday and ill phone them up again on friday to confirm im being disconnected this gradually since april is unnaceptable to me.

think of it from a 20mb users pov, why should they pay more but get throttled for the same transfer as you?
and to the tripping the STM at 11.59pm, if they turned it off completely at midnight, why not just make peak 4pm->11.40pm ? (~20mins of maxing out the connection will trigger STM so no point having it enabled then), but then starting a download at 11.20pm will be pointlessly throttled and so on

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
the whole throttling issues is mute anyway when you can only get 4meg on 20meg BB during the day, they might as well just throttle 24/7 cos that what it seems like. Its just dire and i want NTL back and my 10meg back that worked.

NTL have not gone anywhere, infrastructure is the same as before, staff are the same, cableing is the same, the only things to have changed is the name, and the implimentation of STM.
