Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

It's not a matter of 'can't I wait', it's a matter of why should I wait to download the stuff that I want/need - on a service that I pay for, fair and square.

Honestly, judging by some people's opinions - you'd think it was a public service, paid for by the taxpayer.

Why?
I can and do, its called scheduling, of both FTP and torrent protocols!
If you are going to schedule your downloads for times when you aren't at the computer why even bother with a high speed connection? if i come home and find several things i want to download why should i think, Awesome i'll get that tomorrow! when it would take me less than an hour to download it? although from now on everything else i want to do after that will be at half speed for the rest of the evening. if you randomly browse around like i do its not really feasible to say do it after 12 or before 4 and it comes back again to people assuming that everyone is using newsgroups or some kind of p2p program. (i do use newsgroups before anyone mentions it but i regularly go over the cap just browsing around)

See, entanet. Wouldn't touch them with a bargepole. But there are dozens - some quite small - business ADSL suppliers who'll provide you with exactly what you want.

As for ADSL being "in crisis", so's Virgin Media if you didn't notice. This would be why they're having to cap speeds (And again, my experience is anything over ~24.2MB in "peak time" gets me capped, and my ping also increases by ~175ms when I am).

SOSAGES, oh yea. People still... ah, nm.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

People should realise how lucky they are to be able to get uncapped downloads with cable, if you are not happy with the service you can always goto to adslguide.org and choose another ISP on ADSL then you can complain to the really crap ISP's out there that BT have a stranglehold on.

I support the traffic shaping - they're not just doing it for a laugh to p*ss of customers. While I'm at it, VM are doing major upgrade work - during this time i'd expect the network is going to be slow, my connection is slow on 10mbit - if it's still slow after the upgrades then I'll ring them up.

Bottom line - if you arn't happy with speeds or shaping then move to a new ISP.

Rant complete.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

What, lucky to not get the same service I was paying the same amount for last week? A little realism, thanks. A restriction is a restriction, and the connection is unusuable for gaming after only a very small amount of downloading now.

And mcgeezer, I'd love to move to a new ISP. Please get back to me when VM are allowing other ISP's to provide service across their network, or when you're willing to pay for persuading the landlord to allow it, taking time off work for a BT engineer to come round, the install fee for a BT phone line, the activation charge... (oops, that does make ADSL and its choice of ISP's look better, dosn't it...)

Less rant, more cold hard logic kthx.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

ive only just found out about this traffic shaping and while i have to say it doesnt fill me with joy it has to be better than having a monthly cap, i was about when NTL trying the 1gig month cap thing all those months/years ago however long it was and that is something we definitely do not want, ever!

at least now i know why my speeds are slower than they sued to be, i also believe it should be ever tier of the network and not just the 10mb one, which from reading these posts it seems to be, no point in me staying on the 10mb line and being restricted to 5ish mb if the 1 at 4mb is left at 4mb, if you follow me.

Why should I be willing to pay the landlord? and...
Why should VM allow other ISP's to use their infrastructure?

Look it's very simple, if you don't like or you are not happy with the service - find another ISP, if you can't afford the service you want, get a job, get a better paid job or stop gaming online.

Very simple logic imo.

Hope this helps.

what a load of crap
not everyone has the choice of more then one service, in my street its virgin or virgin, why should I have to put up with less then 1meg 90% of the time when I have 10meg connection and before you ask no, i'm nowhere near a heavy downloader

I take it you're in a place where there're no BT lines then.

If you are paying for a 10mb service and you are only receiving 1mb then drop your connection to 2mb and pay less - or seeing as you can afford 10mbit go with one of the mobile operators (O2, Vodafone, T-Mobile, Orange or 3) who I'm sure will cover your area and provide you with a rock solid 1mb service.

Again, I'll say it - my connection has dropped in speed since early April - VM are upgrading the Network, they'll be re-routing traffic through other areas.

Be patient.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

The problem is that all tiers are effected.

jcardiff is in the same area as I am (CF24) and whilst he get's 1mb on his 10mb line, I 'used' to get (hoping it's fixed now) 0.5mbps on my 4mbps line.

So it's not like he can downgrade his service to 2mbps and gaurantee 1mbps connection....more like sign up for 2mbps and get 0.25mbps if your lucky.

I doubt the low speeds you are getting are due to traffic management, there are other threads about various area based faults, Cardiff being one of them
