Sadly reality rarely lives up to the fantasy - she was probably a middle aged lady and may or may not have had a considerable girth (but probably would have if your luck is anything ike mine) and face like a bag of spanners.

Out of interest, people have been saying their modem config tells them what speed it's set to. What modem is that for? I have an old Motorola Surfboard because that's what was here when I moved in and that doesn't appear to report much beyond failing to upload SW files every day according to the logs. They did send me a Scientific Atlanta but I never bothered to set that one up.

A surfboard 5100?

That's what mine is and that keeps reporting sw download errors too, plus something about it not being for this platform. It always makes me wonder why they bother sending it

Angry Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

Last evening (Tuesday) I noted that my download speed was poor. this was about 4.30pm. Thought it was a glitch. Read about the shaping issue on here this morning, I had a rock solid 3.8 all day. Probably downloaded about 200mb today prior to 4pm - next thing is i am down to 1.9mb and its been like this all evening.

How do I complain?

Or call retentions and get what you have already a lot cheaper.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

The best thing is for everyone to call VM. The more calls, the clearer it will be to them that this is unacceptable.

I'm going to ask for a discount since I mainly use the service between 5.45 and 11.30 when it is crippled. I either want a discount to offset the lost service or a discount to make up for the extra electricity I need to run my PC overnight.

I'd try to get a discount from them, or maybe think about downgrading my service. The 10MB really just isn't worth paying for any more.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

Back on page 45 of this discussion I put up a long post which included the postal address for written complaints to Telewest. I think customer services can put you through to retentions.

Edit: Yeah I think it is a Surfboard 5100. Regularly says "SW upgrade Failed after download - Incompatible SW file" in the logs but then carries on working :/

as Steve Burch said
"With reinvigorated products and packaging, and a focus on cash flow growth, the outlook for our business remains strong"

its not the british way, but perhaps people might be better off filling in the county court papers and seeing what a judge makes of all this as regards any breach of the current consumer contract, after all its in place to protect your interests as much as theirs as the banks found out.

a good place to ask for advice is here http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk...xed-broadband/

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

Oh my god!!!!!

Started downloading at 12.15am this morning and noticed that I was maxing out at around 8MB, slower than I have been on the 10MB last week.

Like a fool I called the Indian call center at 10P per minute and the guy on the other end tells me that his system is showing I have a 10MB connection.

Funny that as a guy from Swansea confirmed that I am on a 20MB config, and the modem tells me this too. The indian call center guy then goes on to tell me that his system is lagging behind the UK one due to the fact that they dont get updated customer records for up to 4 days.

Anyway, I asked him about the traffic shaping and he said "What is traffic shaping". I put the phone down at this point.

It would seem that my modem still thinks its on a 10MB config, even though it is showing a 20MB config in its settings.

As it stands, off cap at this time of the morning, Im downloading at 7.6MB from a 4 port Usenet connection, when on Monday I was maxing out at 9MB with the same setup on the 10MB line.

Is anyone getting 20MB when the cap is removed or is it all wishful thinking?

*** EDIT ***

Ignore that. Just changed my MTU with TCP Optimiser and im hitting 10MB now, still nowhere near 20MB though

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

well today and yesterday i've had nothing but the connection droping at 4:30 - 5:00 and i mean droping every 5-10 mins then coming back online.

what gets me is how stupid virgin media really are i mean lets look at this.
you have downloaders who's using their bandwidth rightly so they've paid
alot of money for that 10mbit/20mbit line so they are only using what they
paid for in the first place but seems virgin business doesn't understand
that people want to use what they pay for hmm funny that

anyway back to what i was saying people download at various times,
some in peak times, some in off-peak it's mixed and always been mixed times.

now every single man dog and his cat is going to wait till 12am then hammer
and start queing downloading from 12am till 4pm so this is going to screw up
and jam their servers tighter than it ever was before.

imagine 88,0000 customers all login in 12am to mass download? you think
their servers are going to be-able to handle this lol its going to make it 10 times worse than it already was or is.

so the outcome of this is going to be the following.

12am - 4pm your connection is going to be dialup speed because everyone
who is on virgin is going to be hammering the offpeak now

and when it hit 4pm lol it's going to be capped anyway and throttled.
so is there a single time hour day or date were actually getting what
we are paying through the nose for?

20mbit lmao what a joke i seriously think buisnesses think their customers
wan't less features and less bang for their money.

when did it all change around that a company offers you less and charges
you more for it ? i mean take sky 1 being pulled so we cant watch lost.

so what other choice do we have but to turn to piracy for viewing what
we are STILL to this DAY paying for. (they never reduced the costs)

and when we do download tv shows we then are in the wrong and
breaking the Copyright law lol ... i tell ya ever since it virgin got branded.
its turned into nothing but a stinking pile of crap

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

I downloaded a couple of shows from usenet last night, got a shutdown manager to close the machine down at 4am.

http://www.download.com/Shutdown-Mac...-10138258.html

Free, and does exactly what it says on the tin.
