I should have included that in the list of bull**** excuses people are giving for this happening.

Could be a spike of activity cause it as its settled down a little infact I have got the fastest connection in days . To be honest in this neck of the woods weve not been sure if its throttlng errors or problems with a fault in nottingham.

And traffic shaping only effects those going over a limit? Yeah right.

Exactly the same for me... I've just checked mine and... Boom! back down to 4MB... I've only used about 400MB today moving data back and forth from work...
Latest test...
The one from earlier today...

logicly as you point out its dead on 4pm, it would appear that the throttling STM kit as it kicks in at that time,is infact introducing as you might expect a delay in the traffic processing, and so is having a detramental effect before its even started officially restricting those users above the set limits.
possibly a sign this new investment in STM kit (which kit is it BTW?)isnt upto the job perhaps..., or are they feeding to many users through the same kit as they dont have enough installed per area as yet?...

That will probably be one of the questions asked of Virgin when they are sitting under the hot lights in the Watchdog studio

It could well be, it's consistant to a lot of people, bang on 4pm, and out of peek times things are back to normal.
Blaming anything other than VM is ridiculous, the speed drops dramatically straight after 4pm regardless to how much you've downloaded.
I can only hope it's just a blip and things settle down soon.

I only hope that they start to traffic shape... only when needed! Not shape everyone! If this mythical 5% that they were always bleating on about do exist, why the hell are we all being penalised for it? At the end of the day we're all paying good money for this service, not paying for the service to change whenever they feel like it because they can't handle the traffic from us all! If they don't end up changing this soon I can see quite a few people dropping their 10/20MB lines to the lower rates and save the money... I'm stuck with VM due to my location, so if this carries on I'm going to do exactly that and they can stick the 20MB line where the sun don't shine! If we were all businesses do you think VM would last long? NO! VM are going to be the only ones losing out in the long run. But as per usual it's the little guys that have to put up with all the crap!!!

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
one thing on this 4pm sudden drop.
Kids finish school at 3pm in this neck of the woods and I doubt workers get home for dead on 4pm mass switch On. So would the surge if it was kids start much earlier. I think VM has to be totally open with its customers. If the shaping software faulty or unable to cope then tell us.

It has only been 6 days since they started doing this. so it shouldn't be too hard to remember if there used to be a sudden drop in speed 7 days and beyond ago

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
I reckon all they've done is implement the hardware, then just leave it on 'straight out the box' for all ranges. Instead of properly configuring it where it's needed. It's either that or they've just rolled it out nationwide and will configure it bit by bit whilst it's in it's current live state. Not good IT practise! We can see that with what's currently happening to us all...

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
as per post above, found a debian DVD Image file over 4gb in size. going to download that after downloading about 1.4gb of files and view the speed. still stiting at a solid 1950/1900kb/sec
note: being downloaded direct from virgins ftp site
---
been solid so far, 1 or 2 major drops for small periods, 5-10 more mins will go over 3gb. - am i right in assuming all those areas where 20mb has been rolled out, traffic shaping will have also taken effect?
