Times out when trying to connect from the USA

http://host-tracker.com reports unreachable (from 25 different locations!)

I'd say that site is dead as a dodo

whats to explain he tried it from his connection

He then tried it from a proxy it doesn't load either way.

As i posted a moment ago i had host-tracker try that site and it failed from all locations.

Its nothing to do with the ISP this end it seems to be the hosts end.

No, you are not right.

TCP works by automatically finding the fastest speed possible to send data. It does this by simply sending as much as possible as quickly as possible, chocking the connection. It then waits for ACK packets to come back and monitors the rate and number of failures. Based on this, is decreases or increases the sending rate appropriately.

The problem is that the ACK packets get delayed by other packets, particularly large data upload packets from P2P programs. QoS orders the sending of packets to give priority to control packets like ACKs, then interactive and on-demand packets, and finally bulk packets.

QoS will never help with issues on the cable network. You can't control the incomming packets, and you can't control (or even react in any meaningful way) to conditions on the cable network. All you can do is send packets to your modem at the best possible rate in the best possible order.

Your speed issues are because the cable modem has a limited upload rate and a relatively large buffer. Your ACK packets in particular are probably being delayed by up to 0.5 seconds or more (check ping times with a saturated upload, they can easily be 2-3000ms). I am currently saturating my upload and have ping times of 35-40ms thanks to efficient QoS. That is of course with fast hosts, if I try and ping a slow host or a host on a congested network there is nothing QoS can do to help.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

They are doing it lower than 3gb and cutting it more than half

I have downloaded 2.4gb by Bit Torrent tonight and an hour ago on Speedtest I was able to get 16mb and 600k upload, now I can get 4.5mb and 200kb upload so they are lying through their teeth

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

I'm positive I'm being throttled too, and I haven't even recieved the upgrade yet. Speed was maxing at 5mbit/s on the previous test I conducted about 10 minutes ago.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

A question about the upgrade !

On the website it has the 3gb thing applying to 10mb no mention of 20 so does the 3gb apply to 20mb or is that changing to 6gb with the doubled speed ?

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

I've not downloaded anything for weeks on end until today when the CellFactor: Revolution beta was released on Fileplanet (8xx MB) and ever since downloading it my connection has been at its worst in over 2 years since rejoining NTL / Virgin Media.

I've always enjoyed a great connection and have never had problems other then some websites not loading, but all that was sorted anyways, but speed wise today is a sort of nightmare.

Broadband Max speed test:

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/res...1125&v=1292726

Other Speed Test:

Tue, 08 May 2007 21:52:54 GMT
1st 512K took 1125 ms = 455.1 KB/sec, approx 3750 Kbps, 3.66 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1125 ms = 455.1 KB/sec, approx 3750 Kbps, 3.66 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1188 ms = 431 KB/sec, approx 3551 Kbps, 3.47 Mbps
4th 512K took 1031 ms = 496.6 KB/sec, approx 4092 Kbps, 4 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 3786 Kbps, 3.7 Mbps

Oh well, maybe they are *upgrading* the Manchester area to 20mb, but anyways, it is not a big problem for me, though it can cause problems when Multiplayer Gaming, the ping is extremely high.

By "I've not downloaded anything for weeks", I mean downloading anything other then browsing webpages.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

one site blocking thru this shaping.

I found the sites which was used during that day mostly when the shaping triggered became un-usable to use. Now it could be that grimsby been absolute a dog for a few days. However these sights were very accessable during the time before 4pm. I am often cannot get to my ps3 forum. noticed IGN game website actually drops my connection which I find very strange.

The way I see it its quite easily theres is a possibilty a users main active site could be blocked during shaping. However would VM take a massive risk to do such thing. If it is happening it will be quite different sites from user to user. Problem lies if VM did or are doing it whats the legality of a service provider to ban a user from a site.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

I was upgraded to 20Mb today after checking my modem config around lunchtime, but when i returned home in the evening and started surfing, reliased it was very slow, so i did another speed test and i was trailing around 6Mb and i barely download 2Gb a day...absoluetly shocking, ive always received near enough 10Mb, i've never received such low speeds !!!! 1 very unhappy customer at the moment
