Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
If you're on 2mb broadband, you get your speed restricted to 1mb if you hit ***mb in either a download or streaming or whatever you choose to do on the web between 4pm and midnight.
If you're on 4mb, you get cut to 2mb if you hit 750mb.
If you're on 10mb or 20mb, you get cut to 5mb if you hit 3gig again between 4pm and midnight.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
Yeah I get that but I said in my post I downloaded about 500Mb total between 4pm - 12am. Then at 12:06 I started my downloads going.
So working by their rules I should not have been cut because I never went over my limit between the peak hours they state. I was getting the full 20Mb for about 40 minutes after 12:06, then got cut.
I don't understand it

GMT vs BST
You will probably find that the measuring system is GMT (so it is now 12:43 GMT, 13:43 BST), so when you were downloading at 00:06 BST, it was 23:06 GMT, so still before midnight, therefore throttling cut in at 750Mb.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
That's a good thought foreverwar.
To test the theory, I'll start my downloads at 1:06 this time.
Cheers

Which you appeared to ignore by your post.......
I have often found "asking" first gains better rewards, saving "demanding" for when all else fails (just me, I suppose).
I can't find the post, but on the CF somewhere someone actually confirmed this - I will try and do a thorough search later this evening.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
Sorry to hijack your thread but If I want to discuss anything to do with STM I have to find another thread that is already going, not start another one.
STM is being applied to 10MB when it is not supposed to be applied to customers until they have been upgraded to the 20MB. Virgin support have confirmed that this should be the case and do not know why they have applied the restrictions already when they shouldn't have.
Hopefully my thread will be reopened.
edit: my thread will not be reopened.

It does look like the STM has kicked in. I've requested an update to see if STM has been applied prior to the speed uplifts.

I cannot say for Bristol, but Newton Abbot has had STM for a while due to network issues.

It is strange that it looks to have been implemented without telling us, I'll see what comes back tomorrow

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
What happens if you call up NTL to complain about it?
I download multiple large files daily (forum backups, website backups), as well as online gaming and considering i'm paying for 4mb, I don't believe that I should be stuck to -2mb because NTL think 750mb is fair. With being out during the day and sleep during the night, it's not exactly viable for 750mb to be the limit when I could be anywhere and not be home until their shaping is in effect.
If they are going to provide me with 2mb during my peak hours, i'm just going to start paying them less. If they want me to be on 2mb and pay £25, they've got another thing coming.

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers
Whilst I sympathise with your feelings, legally you are probably on a sticky wicket if you withhold payments - be careful.

I rang up to complain about it last week, and also told them that TalkTalk are courting my custom and with them I could get >6Mb/s like my neighbours do, so gave me a retention deal on 4Mb for £12.99 for 3 mths.

Seems to be working on BST. When I was downloading in the afternoon last week cut-back to half-speed was almost dead on 16:00hrs!
