Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

Well I have been enjoying my 20Meg since the day it came online without a single drop, that is until coming home this evening to find things a little slow. I've had a look at the modem config & I now find myself on 5Meg. I've called that ever helpfull excuse for a tech support line who have given me the excuse that due to problems with the 20Meg servers everyone is having slow browsing problems. So I have asked if that is why I have been dropped to 5Meg since I certainly haven't hit half a gig of the download never mind all three, reply....

Dead silence, so next thing he says was what sites am I checking my speed with?

Me: Erm the modem config I'm looking at right now!

Tech Sup: Longer silence...

Me: So when can I expect to be taken off traffic shaping then?

Tech Sup: Long silence.... then finaly a reply... "I can not say!"

Me: Gee thanks a lot, have a nice day now. (HUNG UP)

The modem config does not change when you are STM'ed.

Thats not traffic shaping, as previous person mentioned Config does not change when you are shaped its done at UBR level.

Thats a VM cock up!.

Get back on the phone and ask them why you have been downgraded to the wrong tier.

Don't hang up! Remember to demand they credit the cost of the call to you first. If the issue is unresolved, they have to credit the cost of the call.

Yes that is important.
If you don't insist that they credit the cost of the call, then you will be charged.
It's a nice little earner for them.

Out of interest, what does the config page show for a 5Meg connection?

They're not limiting you for 12 hours and you don't return to 20 meg at midnight....thats just the time the counter runs to.STM last for 4 hours from whatever time you got STM'd,so if you were STM'd at 11pm it wouldn't come off untill 3am

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

Yea these new traffic shaping stuff that has been imposed on us are all wrong. VM are telling us that 3GB is a big file and that if you download more than that between 4pm and midnight it puts you in the 5% bracket and then your connection is limited.

3GB might have been a huge file 5 years ago but now? C'mon VM, there are online gaming shops (Can't remember the site atm) where you can purchase games to download and todays games can be anywhere from 2GB up to 8GB files! Game patches can be huge since they add allot of content for games such as WoW and other MMO's.

Why are they supporting caps? If the company advertises something that's what they should deliver. If 20 customers are hammering the service they pay for surly the company should increase the bandwidth in that area, not slay their customers.

No normal person leaves their PC on over night to get a file they wanted the day before, the reason we want faster connections is so we dont have to wait!! Waiting is old hat.

My rant over

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

The shaping should also stop at midnight, not cap you for a futher 4 hours if you hit your limit dead on 12 midnight or just before!!!

Re: Traffic Shaping Affecting All Tiers

When does it start shaping you?

I'm on 20Mb and downloaded about 500Mb at lunch time, then just queued up all my NNTP downloads until 00:00. I started them going at 00:06 and it was going fine until about 15 minutes ago then it just dropped from about 2.3MB/s to 580KB/s.

I waited until after midnight before I started downloading so why am I now being throttled??? I thought it was if you downloaded more than 3GB between 4pm-12am??

This blows.
