Reason for slower than usual speed?

Perhaps the reason we're all getting dire speeds (especially those of us on the 10mb) is because Virgin have to remove capacity from the network to then implement some more!

It makes sense, considering the upgrade is due very soon.

We may all be experiencing slow speeds only in the evening because this is when most people are using the bandwidth, and there simply isn't enough until Virgin replace what they have removed. Anyway, their website states they're doing work this week, so we may find ouselves on 20mb before the weekend, although I doubt it.

That makes quite a lot of sense, although i'd expect them to add new hardware, then remove the old tuff. Then agian if there isn't room... who knows...

Re: Reason for slower than usual speed?

Doesnt make much sense to me, but maybe someone would like to correct me.

If you go to replace some hardware then usually you would have the new hardware ready to inststall, remove the old one, push in the new one, do some last minuite config changes and that would be it. Ive seen datacenters replace routers and switches with just minuites of downtime.

Whenever i have been getting slow speeds, i have been able to get fast speeds to mirrors.virginmedia.com which says to me that the problem is not with their internal capacity, but thier external capacity. This in turn says to me that any upgrades should be to the size of their external connections. Adding in a nice gigabit connection to somone like Verio, globalcrossing, even bt core could help a lot.

As we cannot see whats going on within the network, we may never know, but my suspision is that its not with the internal network.

Re: Reason for slower than usual speed?

Maybe it's something related to this?

http://www.ispreview.co.uk/cgi-bin/n...FFVuEyeWZEzZxP

It might be down to all the national maint work VM are doing at present. Over the past couple of weeks speeds have been up and down when I'm back at home, especially games. Currently at work and the same sites places on our network here are fine.

Hope it improves.

That's interesting - My yougest son plays a US multiplayer game called RuneScape on the PC. Could be part of the reason ours slows right in the afternoon, although apparently it did the same this morning before he went to school.

Re: Reason for slower than usual speed?

Well, my latency always seems pretty consistent and generally under 20ms (when connecting to a UK server)

Re: Reason for slower than usual speed?

Probably will be until after 6 tommrow morning. I believe this is when the updates will be completed.

---------- Post added at 19:05 ---------- Previous post was at 19:05 ----------

But if it remains poor, even after the 20mb is implemented then that is cause for concern.

Mine, from speedtest.bbmax.co.uk - Looks like my download manager may be helping me out (orbit download manager), though ( I can see the icon on the test)

---------- Post added at 21:13 ---------- Previous post was at 21:11 ----------

Again, with speedtest.net - I can definately see the download manager icon. Does anyone else with orbit know if it helps, or is it just that may connection is all good again?
