Will my old NTL modem handle the new 20mb Broadband???

Im still using the Silver NTL modem i got when I 1st took out NTL BB 4 yrs ago. Sorry I dont know the model (how do I find out which one it is??)

Will that handle the 20mb BB?? Im on VIP so Ill be getting upgraded in the next few months apparently.

Ive got Linksys Wireless router (Wireless-G 2.4Ghz, a yr old and im fairly sure that will take it).

But will I have to upgrade my modem? If so, surely I wont have to pay for the upgrade. The modem is on lease from VM and surely its up to them to provide the correct equipment especially since im paying £85 a month for it.

Don't think so. Apparently they can't handle 10mb?

I think your modem is capable of 20Mb.

I once read somewhere the old silver modems (Ambit 100,120,200,2020) are capable of 10mb max, but this was a long while ago and my memory/their post could be mistaken.

Re: Will my old NTL modem handle the new 20mb Broadband???

Ambit 100, 120 and the Terayon Terrajet (sp?) aren't capable of 10Mb on the 256QAM network.
If they are on other network types i'm not sure.

20Mb is a whole new game though, twice as fast and the modem needs to decode twice as much data etc... To find your model number you can flip it upside down and look for one, it might say "NTL:120" or something of the sort, however it might say something like "Scientific Atlanta: xxx" It could say anything, so just reading all the data off the modem itself is a great help. If you know how to get photographs onto here then we can identify that way as well.

However, you could tell us which one from this list: http://www.chetnet.co.uk/articles/in...x_v2&id=91&c=4

Hope this helps

Also, Virgin Media (used to be NTL & Telewest) will normally swap a modem out free if it can't handle the speed of service you are on.

Re: Will my old NTL modem handle the new 20mb Broadband???

Im only on 4Mbps with an Ambit 100, but it doesn't seem to download well at full speed since the change to 256QAM, eg, only ever getting 3.0-3.2Mbps. Should I be entitled to a new one too?

Probably if you can prove they caused the issue. I wouldn't honestly know in that scenario though.

How about using multiple threads to servers? Can you get past 3.2 then?

Re: Will my old NTL modem handle the new 20mb Broadband???

My old terrajet modem could theoretically hold 44mbps (and I live in guildford so it's really old, infact so old that I had to get a new modem for the virginmedia switchover to get more than about 30kbps on my 10mbps line, though it was working fine for my 10mbps line on ntl, since vm discontinued docsis)

There are plenty of physical statistics around, for example on tcniso

The letter I got said that if you required a modem replacement to get the 20Mb you'd be charged something like £25 for the swap, they have a website for compatiblity but so far haven't posted any details.

Re: Will my old NTL modem handle the new 20mb Broadband???

Until very recently I had an old Ambit 120. Like many on the then NTHell network I was getting speed / connection problems. The guy that support sent to look into the problem accidently spilled the offered cuppa all over it.
Result nice new 250 modem installed, problems cured. From what he said although the older modems may handle the higher speeds OK they struggle to cope with 256QAM standards much more so.
