Just upgraded to 10Mb! Doncaster.
Wow, this is blisteringly fast....
Speedtest.bbmax.co.uk:
Download Speed: 724 kbps (90.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 339 kbps (42.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Forum test:
Wed, 21 Mar 2007 15:05:09 GMT
1st 512K took 4047 ms = 126.5 KB/sec, approx 1042 Kbps, 1.02 Mbps
2nd 512K took 4859 ms = 105.4 KB/sec, approx 868 Kbps, 0.85 Mbps
3rd 512K took 4250 ms = 120.5 KB/sec, approx 993 Kbps, 0.97 Mbps
4th 512K took 4188 ms = 122.3 KB/sec, approx 1008 Kbps, 0.98 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 978 Kbps, 0.96 Mbps
And of course speedtest.net:
Before i was stable at 4Mb down On the 4Mb package. I've tried with and without router, restarted the modem and PC, everything i can think of really, and nothing seems to have helped.
Signal etc here:
Frequency 331000000 Hz
Signal To Noise Ratio 38.7 dB
Power Level-1.9 dBmV
The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. Please Reload/Refresh this Page for a new reading
Channel ID 3
Frequency 34000000 Hz
Power 46.0 dBmV
Any suggestions?

Re: Just upgraded to 10Mb! Doncaster.
I meant any helpful suggestions? In the sense of anything else i could try...
I'm using Ethernet by the way, wired router connections. Everything is pretty much optimal...
EDIT: Better...

Re: Just upgraded to 10Mb! Doncaster.
Afraid you may be holding your breath, the 10Mb service in most parts of the VM network is poor at best and nonexistent at worse, I have tried it 3 times so far this year and always downgrade again within a few days, it's simply not worth the hassle.
The 4Mb service seems to be stable and doesn't suffer too much with the traffic shaping but it's still apparent that VM are expecting people to pay for a service they cannot provide.

Re: Just upgraded to 10Mb! Doncaster.
I've noticed that from when I get home from work (around 5pm) I get around 1.5Mbit down. But then, at around the 10pm mark, I start to get more towards 8-9Mbit.
Only noticed it the last 6-8 weeks though. Over subscribed or traffic shaping?

Re: Just upgraded to 10Mb! Doncaster.
Probably congestion... I'm getting annoyed now, however my latency has improved and Skype seems to skip way way less now as well
However i would like my other 9Mb back Or at least to appear... We shall see later tonight.
EDIT: This seems like a high amount of errors in 3hours to me....

Re: Just upgraded to 10Mb! Doncaster.
I don't and very rarely get any probs with 10mb, I get pretty much 1.22mb/sec 24/7, and that again that's in the Ipswich area.

Re: Just upgraded to 10Mb! Doncaster.
I think i'll give them a call tomorrow, tell them what's going on, see what they can do if anything... It's patchy at best Might just go back to 4Mb until this area is upgraded.

Re: Just upgraded to 10Mb! Doncaster.
Im in the same boat, over the last few months almost every speed test showed that i was maxing on the 4MB service, i upgraded yesterday and now it ranges from 45 kB/s to 601 kB/s but its mainly giving me between 1.5MB-2MB.
Why would the 10MB service be WORSE than the 4MB service?
Let me know what they say when you phone.
Cheers,
Wayne

Re: Just upgraded to 10Mb! Doncaster.
Opened 4 threads to a HTTP server... Managing to pull down at 500kBps, but have maxed this line now at 1.2mBps For about 4 seconds...
So, seems like congestion to me, which isn't good, but at least i know what the problem is :/ Maybe when the 20Mb upgrades come along they will upgrade the UBR's here... I'll see on the phone to them tomorrow.

Re: Just upgraded to 10Mb! Doncaster.
Ive actually just got off the phone with Virgin, ive still got ntl.home 100 cable modem from years ago so i asked if this could be the problem, the lady said it could be. Sent a few signals to the modem, still couldnt get past about 300 kB/s so booked a engineer for between 8am-1pm this friday to give me a new cable modem so hopefully that will solve the problem! Fingers crossed!
