Re: high ping rate
uk, portsmouth
im a gamer, so it quite annoys me, ive tried googling and everything and the only solution is NTL being weird but i cant find out how to fix it!
and i called broadband techinicians and the man said in 24hours your high ping rate should be fixed, but it wasnt.
---------- Post added at 21:53 ---------- Previous post was at 20:20 ----------
i used to have a router that was properly set up with my cable modem aswell, but then i disconnected it and connected my cable modem straight to my pc.
I think my cable modem has to be properly set up again, does it? is there any suggestion that this might cause my ping rate

Re: high ping rate
call up the ntl helpdesk and ask them to run a BLUETOOLS diagnostics test all the way to your cable modem and look for the cable type and finally match that with the list of known NTL faults . If the cable on which u r on is at fault you can not do anything . Otherwise request the guy to escalate the matter to the server support queue .
7 60 ms 28 ms 127 ms nth-bb-b-so-200-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.194]
looks like a routing issue to me .....

Re: high ping rate
Your first hop looks unusually high. If you're using a usb connection to the modem, since you suggested you might need a cd, then switch to ethernet. If you're using an ethernet connection then no drivers are needed so the problem lies either in your pc or NTL's network. The latter being possible considering the amount of packetloss I've been seeing on the network for the last 24 hours, this is getting become a regular cycle by the way, things being great for a couple of weeks then total crud for 2-4 days. Maybe Uma Thurman could take a pay cut to pay a for a few network engineers.
Here's my traceroute to the same location :
1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 192.168.1.1 (ignore this as it's my router)
2 6 ms 7 ms 7 ms 10.133.224.1 <<< first hop.
3 9 ms 6 ms 8 midd-t2cam1-a-ge94.inet.ntl.com[213.106.238.93]
4 * 7 ms * midd-t2core-a-ge-wan63.inet.ntl.com
5 9 ms * 12 ms lee-bb-a-so-710-0.inet.ntl.com[213.105.174.149]
6 21 ms * 14 ms nth-bb-b-so-100-0.inet.ntl.com[62.253.185.101]
7 13 ms * 14 ms tele-ic-1-as0-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.184.2]
8 16 ms 23 ms 13 ms 212.250.14.98
9 * 18 ms 15 ms 193.238.84.34

Re: high ping rate
Jerry, I recommend that you try the same ping/tracert at some time in the middle of the night if possible, to rule out the chance thats its just peak time network congestion.

the engineer told me to wait at the end of february and see but im tired of waiting =.=

Re: high ping rate
Horace has already suggested you look at your system set up, as i agree the problem seems to originate at your 1 hop

Re: high ping rate
just so you know, the pings used in games and the ping command are not the same thing, my guess is you're on a highly used ubr which is getting congested during peak times

Re: high ping rate
its the end of feb, and the engineer told me that maybe the problem with fix then, well it hasnt, its not my system setup because ive checked it many times and been using this setup for a very long time. Is there any way i can ring up VM, cant i like change the UBR area im in to not get the high ping rate i get? my transfer rate is absoutely fine, it drops down a bit but thats due to peak times which im not bothered.
Any technicians or some1 with brains that can maybe help me?
im tired of this been having this problem since last year october.

Yep that's a congestion problem, too much demand on not enough bandwidth. Nothing to do with routing, your set up, etc.
Only ones who can sort it are VM, sounds like it'll need new hardware
