Slow internet for around 6 months now.

For around 6 months ive had the slowest of slow internet speeds, i'm paying for 4mb internet and only recieving a fraction of the speed.

Initially i believed it was a computer problem but after buying a new pc i am convinced that i am being fooled around by NTL.

I intend on complaining directly to NTL, i believe i should be getting what i am paying for, if they fail to sort the problem out i will seek another ISP.

Any information you can provide is welcome.

My internet is being routed between 3 computers, however even when only 1 of these is connected the speed does not change.

Have you run any speed tests, I run www.speedtest.net every week or so just to keep an eye on things. I'm on the 4Mb service, this is a test I've just taken which is about par for the course.

Im recieving less than a quarter of what speed i should have.

I'm going to complain to NTL, do you think this will resolve the problem?

It's worth complaining, you've got both your and mine speed test to show that something isn't right with your download speeds. First of all though I would connect one computer directly to the modem and do the speed check again to prove it's not the router causing the slow down. Also do you have a firewall on the computer, if yes disable that as well temporarily before re-running the test. Run the speed test on your other computers as well.

What model of cable modem do you have? If it's a ntl100 or Terayon than that may be the issue.

I few weeks ago i had speed equivilent to dial-up. An engineer came and couldn't sort it and it ended up lasting a month or so. I decided to try a few things myself and one of them was powering my modem off for a day while i was at work. When i turned it back on, i had a different IP and speeds back to 10mb. I'm not a tech so i don't understand why, but that was definitely the solution for me.

I should have mentioned that I'm using a Terayon so I don't think that is the problem.

Terayon modems have lots of problems! Ring faults to see if you can get it replaced.
