Re: Newsgroup Retention

If you wanna get anything from usenet and not be one of the annoying, billboarding crowd that fruitlessly beg for fills day in and day out then you gotta shell out a tiny bit for a Premium Newsserver.

Only the people who do this are in a position to upload fills, people who persist in using their ISP's crap newserver should not expect their usenet experience to be subsidised by others.

It's time to stop moaning and get your hand in your pocket.

Re: Newsgroup Retention

I had a friend visit today and he mentioned that the way the newsgroup servers are dropping posts makes it look intentional - i.e. NTL's attempt at getting shot of either the binary groups altogether; or getting customers to switch to another ISP.. so that they can offer greater apparent speeds when NTL become Virgin.

I couldn't really argue with him.

And as a side note, I received my latest bill from NTL today, and they have added a mysterious £2.26 charge with no explanation.

So, off to another ISP I go.. Hmm. eclipse or nildram look interesting......

So what is wrong with subscribing to an external newsgroup provider?

I have thought about paying, and I wasnt moaning just asking if this was a widespread problem and had others has simular problems.

I dont leech, beg for thrills or expect my usenet experience to be subsidised by anyone.

I guess by the tone of your post Mick that you do indeed pay for your newgroup use.

Re: Newsgroup Retention

NTL's usenet server is only useful for text only groups, anything with binaries in it is either not carried or its capacity is so limited as to be useless. I've been an Easynews customer for four years and I'm more than happy to recommend them. www.easynews.com

king2001 is an unknown quantity at this point
Re: Newsgroup Retention

To be honest their retention has never been very lengthy but the completion rate has always been much better than the last couple of weeks.

Definitely worth paying the extra money for someone like giganews or newshosting if you are after the binaries.

Re: Newsgroup Retention

LOTS of posts in newsgroups at the moment blaming NTL for all the incomplete posts...... no idea how accurate that is......

If they provide the service, I would expect them to at least TRY to maintain it at an acceptable level.

I'd rather NTL get their network infrastructure fixed first. There are far more serious problems out there than newsgroup retention.

Yea...and im sure you guys have noticed its only group with illegal binaries that the retention has gone to pot.

Gonna ring ntl and moan that you cant download ur warez?

As said above, you want a good retention your gonna have to pay, simple as.

Giganews is only £13/month for unlimited useage, are people really that tight?
