connection failures (weird)

hi all hope you all had a great holl!
I am in the wirral on ntl @ 10Mb and I also have adsl with zen :-)
these are fed to a Draytek 3300v load balancing router then on to the network
when I am downloading large files like say a linux distro (iso) the cable connection will suddenly dissapear!
does not seem to happen if the download is slow <600k but 30 seconds after exeeding 900k the connection will drop!
the modem retains sync (sync & rdy led's remain on) and if I reset the router dhcp is handing out the correct ip address 82.27.xx.xx but that is all.. untill I reset the router
not really being a cable person.. I am not sure how you refer to the modem I have here (60194e-a12)
any one have any thoughts?
NTL say that they cannot detect a fault of course (nothing new here really)
I suspect a firmware issue but as all you chaps probably have more time logged with cable than I do maybe you can point me somewhere else?
thanks a lot for taking the time to read this!
cheers

oh.. btw the adsl drops every now and then for a few mins then re-connects :-)
the joys of dsl.. be thankfull you are using cable :-)
the 9Mb adsl connection is at its very best half the speed of the 10Mb cable and more often than not only a third :-)

Does the problem repeat itself if you are only using the ntl modem, directly connected to a PC, without any of your other complex kit?

Re: connection failures (weird)

Hi there and thanks for the welcome :-)
I have to admit to not trying this for a while though it did seem to do it a few weeks ago when I dragged my laptop to the other end of the house and tried it..
(the rest of the pc gear is the other end of the house)
I will run a temp ethernet lead in later and post the results :-)
thanks for your help!!

Re: connection failures (weird)

It sounds like you know your way around a computer, so forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question, but does it only happen with torrents?
Not knowing how a Linux distro. is handed out, I don't know if they are torrents, but the ISO lead me to believe it is.

I used to have problems with torrent files, where if it went over a certain speed the connection would drop. It was just a case of changing some settings and it works fine now. It might be worth ruling that out before running coax. and e/net cabling here there and everywhere.

Re: connection failures (weird)

hi again chaps & chapesses
I have been in work/ college so it has taken a while to get back!
on connecting a pc directly to the modem..
I get the same problems
what is also interesting.. although the sync & rdy led's remain on I loose the web interface to the modem (192.168.100.1) though the ethernet stays live I am unable to ping the modem (or anything else of course )
I know this is not a PC fault as
a) I tried two
b) when the fault occors with the router in situ I can still access the web interface on the router (and my webserver via loopback in the router)
so I am thinking faulty modem or firmware issue!
anyone got any other ideas before I try to convince level 1 to let me talk to level 2
(a bit bored with that script given to level 1 now )

oh btw this is using ftp and http downloads I have not tried torrents as they tend to make a mess of routers load balancing rules lol!
thanks all!
Garry

Re: connection failures (weird)

hi there Lemonzest!
I think we would need some more details before we could say the problem was related.
it sounds more like a problem with the PC configuration but it is difficult to say anything conclusive as you dont say much about the equipment you are using ot how things are set up
let us know and I am sure there are plenty of peeps here thay can help!
cheers!

You cannot log into the modem if you have an alternative proxy specified.

HTH.

hi there!
I may be missunderstanding you but...
the DHCP address given to my machine when directly connected remains unchanged so.. it seems logical to me that if I can see the web interface on the modem before the problem shows up and the address of my PC (directly connected to the modem) remains unchanged then if the problem was with connectivity at the WAN interface of the modem.. I should still expect to see the internal webserver (I am assuming loopback happens in the modem as the web interface and the gateway address are on different sumnets) chances are the modem itself is working at WAN level but the protocol translation has failed?
spent 35 mins on the phone earlier and didnt even get past the que
oh well.. may try again later!
anyone got any other ideas?
I take it there is no way for me to update the modems firmware?
thanks a lot for all your replies

Re: connection failures (weird)

Hi Garry
I'm a simple soul really, not really into all that networking stuff.
I only know that when I first got an Ambit 250 nobody, including the engineer installing it, could access it's web interface.
I discovered a few days later that I had specified a proxy other than my default some time earlier and then forgot about it.
Resetting the proxy back to default allowed me to access the modems web interface as normal.
To use an alternative proxy port 8080 instead of port 80 has to be selected. Maybe this is the problem? I'm not sure of that.
If that's incorrect I have no doubt a more knowledgable soul will be along shortly to explain it properly.
It's just something that's easily overlooked.

Re: connection failures (weird)

Hi Mick!
it's certainly a point to watch out for
and it gives you an idea how well trained the average ntl engineer is
if networking is not your thing and you dont do it every day: well normally there is no reason to realise it would cause a problem.
but people who are doing this as there job.. day in day out?
oh well..
for my part I am still trying to get in contact with ntl customer services
thing is.. I think I want to get a tv drive too if the deal is ok
I will let everyone know what the outcome is..
but as usual.. if anyone out there has any other ideas... well it would certainly be better than listening to the phone messages lol!!
