Pathetic download speed
Ive attatched an image containing a bandwidth graph on my storage server which has been trying to download some 80gb of files from my server in the USA, using 5 FTP connections. This server has a 10Mbps uplink and it is not saturated. I own the server.
Ive been trying to download this data for about 4 days now and the speed has just dropped very low. I can accept the drop in speeds in peak hours, thats normal. But last night it dropped to 0.7Mbps and has stuck there since.
The graph provided is from SNMP data saved by PRTG and displayed on the graph. Ive made it large for more accuracy.
Has anybody got any idea what is going on? The speeds shouldn't be this bad. Its normally excellent in my area, usually flawless.
Im in the TS6 0 area of Middlesbrough.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Pathetic download speed
Do you get these speeds downloading from another ftp? What about http or udp downloads etc? Teesside is normally very good. Peering issue?

Re: Pathetic download speed
Peering seems fine, pings are the usual 140-160ms. No saturation on the server. Seems fine on the CF speed test in the NTL network.
Looks like NTL's link to the US is saturated. 0.7Mbps to Dallas, TX on speedtest.net, thats where the dedicated server is.

Re: Pathetic download speed
Didn't I read somewhere about Aardman having a big NTL link to the USA? Maybe they are nicking all the bandwidth

NTL have a really bad link to the US which results in me getting no more than 200kb/s from any of the dedicated servers i pay for, which is abit of a **** take aint it.
And that's with 100mbit dedicated ports.
i usually get 140ms upto 300ms response times to anywhere in the US, extremely annoying and ntl are very aware of the problem (i've complained about it often enough)

Re: Pathetic download speed
Ive attatched another bandwidth graph image. As you can see my BB has been at 0.7Mbps for nearly 2 days now.

I gotta second that. It's as bad, at the moment, if not indeed worse than it ever has been.
Was only getting 150k per slot yesterday.
For me the problem appears to be that all Level3 routers are saturated and dropping packets thus ensuring only a percentage of my acks are getting through.
Been like it for months and months now. It appears to be getting steadily worse as time goes by.

Re: Pathetic download speed
Not that this is going to help..but I just temporarily switched to L3 routes on EasyNews and its maxing my connection without a problem.

Re: Pathetic download speed
NTL have had terrible peering on many routes with the USA for ages, I doubt it will ever get better, many of us have complained, we've been told the reasons, and it seems things won't ever change, some routes are fine but many are awful compared to other ISP's.
Many US servers only give me 20-30k (10 meg connection here), switching proxies can help http traffic enormously, but a lot of routes have been fubared for years.
A 2 meg DSL connection can give far better results than a 10 meg NTL one on many routes (and not only to the USA, NTL's asian routes are far inferior to many DSL connections as well).

Re: Pathetic download speed
I've also witnessed poor peering with USA. My website is in fact hosted on a US server and I get utterly pathetic download speeds (30kB/s) on a 2meg connection. When I go to work I try downloading files from my site using BT ADSL and everything's fine and downloads at max speed (on an 8meg connection).
