Re: Trouble in broadband land.

Just a quick question mainly aimed at Sandboy13 - what sort of capacity are we talking about per UBR? I'm just curious as to how many users a UBR can support if they are all on the top tier.

Re: Trouble in broadband land.

Mine was unusable last night, since I downgraded from 10 meg recently it has been much better on 4meg, but still never great. I'm in Barry if it makes a difference.

If only I had a BT line, I'd be off, but £125 install is just too steep for me!

Re: Trouble in broadband land.

£125 just for an install???!? OMG.

I'm waiting for my NTL (re)install - they are insisting on a new modem rather than re-registering my old one but I don't really mind as I never had a problem with my 4MB when I had it previously. I'd guess that in my area, their aren't that many people who are BB customers or TV for that matter judging by the number of Sky dishes (one house near me has 3!)

The only downside I can see with NTL is that its nigh on impossible to get any sense out of the Customer Service people (when your call goes to India).

Magicman,

Off the top of my head I don't know I am sorry. A lot of it is down to what cards are in the UBR, how it's fed/split/run. You have two different cards (We use in NTL) on is an MC16 and the other is an MC28.

There are so many different variables, if it's QAM 64 or QAM 256 it's difficult to give a ball park figure I'm sorry.

Re: Trouble in broadband land.

Saneboy,

No need to apologise mate - I was just curious. As I mentioned, I'm guessing that my area is fairly under subscribed as I always had a consistent 4MB connection when I wanted/needed the full bandwidth. I'm hoping that the 6-8 months that I've been away things havent gone drastically downhill. Fingers crossed (I'll find out on the 16th). Thanks for the reply though.

If you've ever had a BT line before, then it's free to reconnect, obviously.

But even if you havent, you can often get a free connection. The more you spend on call charges, the more likely you'll be able to persuade them.

Besides, if you're paying less per month, for a higher rated speed, and a reliable service, you'll soon recoup any initial outlay.

Re: Trouble in broadband land.

Hello all! Very interesting thread this one.

I've noticed my connection just getting slower and slower. 0.20mb on a 4mb account?

Never had this happen before untill I moved to a new house (which NTL managed to screw up, leaving me unconnected for a month and still having the cheek to charge).

I've mailed Tech-support and asked them to sort it or I'll just cancel my Direct Debit. They seem to understand money, (well better than I can understand customer services)

Anyway here's my first post of one of these speed tests.

Usually a complete waste of time. You have to phone them.

Save your energy, you'll just be conversing with some Indian Guy who doesn't give a toss.

This would be the Retentions Dept. Trouble here is that it seems there are so many trying to cancel that it is extremely hard to get to speak to anyone anymore. I hear they just cut you off after a while.
LOL! so what's new.

Of course in order to stem the exodus maybe Ntl just decided not to man the Dept anymore.
