More slow speeds
I notice a lot of people are getting slow speeds , so i just thought id post mine . The general opinion im picking up on is that tw are traffic shaping from 6pm to 1am . Well for the past few nights ive been monitoring my downloads and nothing changes after 1am . I used to get 1.2 mb downloads constant , but now it fluctuates between 400 to 800kbs. Im getting sick of this and was wondering if any of you guys have had this problem resolved or do i just deal with it . I know im probably repeating other peoples posts here , but whats the use in paying for 10 mb and not getting it ???

Re: More slow speeds
It's not actually "upto" 10mbps, you should have a 10mbps service all the time. It's ADSL which is "upto" because that all depends on how close you are to the BT exchange and what your line can handle. Cable is fibreoptic and therefore it is not affected by this.
Things that could be affecting your speed could be too many people hogging the service at one time, it could be the website you are downloading or telewest could have a fault somewhere. Try downloading something from the telewest servers to see what the speed is like.

I think you'll find it most certainly is 'up to' 10mb, when you've had the service as long as I had it, and been around the forum as long as some of us, and indeed read the tales of woe and even further read the NTL page, then you might realize that it is most definitely UP TO 10mB

Re: More slow speeds
It seems to vary for me, during the day its tick tock fine, but from around 4pm it starts.
The slow speeds seem gone, HOWEVER I get lots and lots of disconnections, around 5 in a space of 5 minutes.
People on MSN thought I wanted attention!
EDIT: Just too add the network logo from my router stays on.

I think you'll find that for reasons I've already posted Telewest it is not really an 'upto' 10mb service. If you rang BT and said that you were not getting 8mb speeds on their servers they would tell you that it is an "upto" service and send you on your merry way. If you ring Telewest they will run through diagnostics to test your speed and look into issues that could be causing the slow speeds, because you should always have a 10mb connection.
Admittedly Telewest does sell it as an 'upto' service, but really if you are not getting your full service you should give them a call...no doubt there'll be an issue somewhere.

So what your saying is that although NTL:Telewest sell this product as 'up to 10 mb' they have it wrong..............................interesting, if NTL have everything running A.O.K. coz it's fibre, why do so many people not get their full speed do you think ?
I for one, wait with baited breath to hear again

Coz I can't see one explanation to your claim, other than 'it's fibre so it must be ok'
EDIT: do you have, or have you had NTL cable broadband ?

Re: More slow speeds
I have my installation booked for this friday. When I called to order I specifically asked the guy "Does 4meg mean 4meg" he says yes not 3.5 not 3.8 its 4 meg. I again asked if I upgrade to meg will it be 10meg again he confirmed yes and that the service should not be affected by how many users are in or distance is a factor (unlike other isp's he was quick to point out!)
therefore my question is - IS ANYBODY hitting the speeds they are paying for ?
I realise most people will only post a message when they are unhappy........

OK, again, I'll say it, every speed option is 'up to' your not guaranteed to hit those top speeds at all, yes you will get it some / most of the time, if your lucky, but don't for one second think you'll get it all the time because the nice sales guy told you so.
Here is just one thread with tales of woe, I picked this one in particular because it contains posts and speed test results referring to various tiers of NTL, also, Bill C is an NTL engineer, he has posted in the thread as well, if he's not getting the speed's, and he know's his stuff, what chance do you think the rest of us have.

Re: More slow speeds
Bopdude, you seem to be very touchy on this subject. I appreciate that sometimes people will not be getting the full speeds, maybe due to things like High utilisation on UBR's, SNR problems etc. Telewest see's these as faults and therefore (sometimes later rather than sooner) fixes them. Getting the full speeds from outside of the telewest network is something different, that all depends on factors that are out of their control.
'Upto Xmb' is probably something that telewest put in as a kind of get out claus for their current capping of some areas.
ps. As for the post of your thread; even those telewest employee's admit that things must have gone "tit's up".

If I appear to be touchy it might have something to do with the way you seem to talking but nothing usefull's coming out, I mean, you have just contradicted yourself, I may not know a lot, but have had NTL services since it was 1p a minute dial up / 1mb broadband and then 10mb broadband, so I can comment on my experience, and when I say ( and I know ) that it's up to 10mb, I don't like a post like your first in this thread virtually telling me I'm talking crap.
Now, I asked you a question, where are you drawing your ideas from, have you had, or have you got, NTL broadband?

But how can it, you say that it's fibre so it will be ok, now I'm done with this thread, enjoy yourself

Re: More slow speeds
Smile man. It's not a personal attack on you and I appologise if I offended you.
So I'll explain again:
Telewest is not affected in the 'upto' sense like it is with ADSL. ADSL relies on distance from the exchange, noise on the line quality of the line etc. Therefore on an ADSL line you probably won't ever get more than 8mbs, and speeds can vary.
Telewest is FibreOptic. It is not affected much at all by noise or line distance. It can also handle much more than 10mb. The only reason that speeds would not be constant within the telewest network is if there was a fault somewhere eg. Bad signals at the UBR, High utilisation of the UBR or possibly overloaded servers....maybe even a problem with the modem.
'Upto' in the telewest sense is more along the lines of "You should get xmb speed...but there maybe faults and we might cap you at times"
To test the speed you should download a large file from a within the telewest network and check the transfer rate.
EG: If for instance you were on a 10mb connection and downloading a large file from within the telewest network, you should download at about 1.1MB/s. Now if the transfer rate on this download was only 800kb/s or something, I'd know that there was an issue somewhere.

Re: More slow speeds
I signed up specifically to "10mb unlimited broadband" quite some months prior to any assertion of it being "up to" or any other terminolgy used to excuse poor service pro rata.
On my bill it reads, as I'm sure many others do, 10MB UNLIMITED.
Traffic shaping - the reason for the bulk of the pitiful down/uploads after 6pm - does not constitute "unlimited", quite the opposite in fact.
