PS2 with NTL?

I have been told that a PS2 cannot connect to the net through an NTL STB without having a router somewhere in the connection.

My setup is as follows:

The internet comes from the set-top into a wireless router

The wireless router sends a signal up to a laptop in my room (its in the loft, the router in the kitchen)

The laptop shares the internet connection via a cross-over cable with the ps2

This is the only practical way I can get the internet connection up to my PS2. Everything works except the DNAS test at the end, but as the connection comes through a router beforehand shouldn't the connection work now?

Thanks in advance

Re: PS2 with NTL?

I know there is a compatability issue with the PS2 and Set top box.

With a router inbetween.. dunno, it might fix it. just make sure you setup the PS2 to connect through a DMZ on the router.

Re: PS2 with NTL?

There's a thought, now to do that would I set the laptop itself in the DMZ?

Re: PS2 with NTL?

No, set the DMZ on the router. This will give you an IP adress. Lets say for example you set it to 192.168.1.50

Now you need to configure your PS2 to use that address.

with the network access disc, or any game which can do it, set it up like this:

Manual settings:
IP Address: 192.168.1.50 (DMZ)
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway:192.168.1.1 (this is your Routers IP, i used that number as an example)

Primary DNS: 192.168.1.1
Seconadary 0.0.0.0

Re: PS2 with NTL?

OK will have a go at it now and let you know how I get on. Cheers buddy

---------- Post added at 20:53 ---------- Previous post was at 20:48 ----------

Right it now fails at the DNS test instead of the DNAS, the router's IP is 192.168.2.1 so i set the DNS and Gateway to that address but got nowhere unfortunately

Does the fact that the laptop is connected wirelessly and assigned an IP automatically by the router mean that I would have to use dynamic IP addressing on the PS2? Also, because it is done through internet connection sharing, the LAN ethernet port on the laptop has an IP of 192.168.0.1 and this cannot be changed as it's a windows default setting. Does this help you get anywhere? Thanks again

Re: PS2 with NTL?

Try using NTL's DNS addresses then

Edit : Found this on port forward.com -

NTL (Cable) and Virgin.net (ADSL)
194.168.4.100
194.168.8.100

Same error for some reason "DNS resolve failed - no response from server"

Does what I said in my last post affect the configuration in any way?

Re: PS2 with NTL?

Sorry I didnt actually realise you was going through your laptop aswell.. my bad for not reading properly :P

Umm, Im not sure if the DMZ would work if your going through a laptop to be honest. Do you know the driver date of your Network Interface Card?

Re: PS2 with NTL?

Haha never mind I'm always doing it

The LAN ethernet card that I'm connecting to the PS2 has drivers from the 19th April 2006 and the wireless adapter from 4th December 2005

Re: PS2 with NTL?

Have you tried connecting with automatic ip address settings and turning the firewall off on the router? Also when it fails on DNS, it may be due to ports being blocked. Do you have any security on the laptop (make sure windows firewall is turned off in control panel)

Re: PS2 with NTL?

I do have a spare Cable/DSL router though. Could I setup the DMZ in the same way on that router and have the laptop's shared internet going into the second router and connecting the second router next to the laptop into the PS2?

And it works fine even with firewalls active when i use dynamic IP settings on the PS2 so i doubt it is a port blocking issue, unless you meant DNAS?

Well, you'd still be going through the router downstairs.. so doubt that would change anything.

Yes, when it fails on DNAS its usually due to ports being blocked

I get the feeling this isn't going to work for some reason!

---------- Post added at 21:24 ---------- Previous post was at 21:22 ----------

I wil try turning off all security programs on the PC, setting the laptop in the DMZ downstairs and the PS2 in the DMZ upstairs - then i'll start the test and pray

Disable the firewall on the downstairs router, try connecting with automatic IP address settings. If That still fails, ask for an Ethernet modem from NTL.

Re: PS2 with NTL?

There's something called Network Address Translation, that seems to be the way to disable the firewall but it says something about certain ways of connecting have to have this feature on, does it mean anything to you?

"Before you enable this function, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SET THE ADMINISTRATOR PASSWORD. Network Address Translation (NAT) is the method by which the router shares the single IP address assigned by your ISP with the computers on your network. Advanced users should only use this function. This function should only be used if your ISP assigns you multiple IP addresses or you need NAT disabled for an advanced system configuration. If you have a single IP address and you turn NAT off, the computers on your network will not be able to access the Internet. Other problems may also occur. Turning off NAT will disable your firewall functions. "

If it helps...? Thanks for all the help by the way
