What standard equipment is supplied?
Hi Guys,
Wonder if you could help me. I'm about to sign up for 4MB b.b / TV and Phone but can't find the details anywhere which show the details of the equipment normally supplied by NTL. I've seen some discusion of problems with Pace STB's. Any advise on how to get the best equipt? I will shortly wish to switch to Wireless so what do I need to get.
Thanks in advance (P.S the best response will get free access to my webcam as soon as its live)
Natasha

If you are an existing ntl cable tv digital subscriber, you might connect to the internet via the STB. That is becoming less and less likely as none of the STBs will support the fastest cable broadband speeds, and many of the older Pace boxes can't even handle 1 meg properly. All you'd get is the ethernet cables supplied for you to plug in yourself and follow the instructions.
In most areas ntl:telewest will install a cable modem. That will involve new cabling being run from outside of your house to your chosen location from the modem. The modem, short length of ethernet cable, and a CD (you don't need that) is all you get.
Both STB or modem will only support a single computer connection. If you are wanting more than one computer, or wireless, you will need to separately buy a cable compatible router. Make sure it is 802.11g minimum speed. Linksys WRT54G has been popular but there are many others.

Re: What standard equipment is supplied?
*The models of STB/Modem you'll get depends on what the engineer has in the van/is willing to give you.
*may or may not have changed since myself and my parents had cable installed

I thought that all installations of broadband via STB stopped a few months ago

Re: What standard equipment is supplied?
Hi
I signed up today for BB after having nightmares with SKY BB (avoid at all costs!) and BT.
The guy talked mme into 4MB instead of 10MB, strange I know but said the 1MB comes with a wireless router. Anyway while he's processing my order he says "oh you get a wireless router with 4MB too" so I was pleased.
So Natashab dont go running out buying a router just yet! call them and check first.
Now a (probably stupid) question of my own.. my wireless pc card Netgear WG511 whuch Ive been using for ADSL will this work with cable BB does anyone know ? Cheers

Re: What standard equipment is supplied?
the wireless card should work OK, provided you have the wireless router and they are both set on the same channel. May be a case of "RTFM" for the precise configuration . Remember that there are two speed standards 802.11b and 802.11g, the 11b is only 11 meg max, which, allowing for degradation of the wireless signal is probably inadequate if you were to go for a 10 meg boradbadn connection.
The ntl:telewest supplied router is limited compared to a standard shop bought unit. My understanding is it will only support one connection at a time, i.e. enables your single PC to be wireless rather than wired. Most routers would normally support multiple PCs.

Re: What standard equipment is supplied?
Best equipment from NTL at the moment is the Samsung 2100C STB and the NTL250 modem as suggested by Nikesh.
For wireless routers, I would suggest the Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (assuming you have a compatible wireless card)

Re: What standard equipment is supplied?
I have a Belkin g router which gives a solid signal all the time. And there's a special setup section on this forum about Belkins.
