Changing Cablemodem
For some time I have had trouble with my Cablemodem periodically crashing (internet connection disappears, no ping response from the modem etc.).
This is with an ntl:200 modem.
Since power cycling the modem will bring my connection back (sometimes for a couple of minutes and sometimes for a few weeks), I can't get ntl to replace it.
If I get my hands on an ntl:250 from a customer that no-longer
uses the service, can I change the modems over and register the new one? (presumably using autoregister).
If I do this, will it case any problems wrt billing?
TIA for any help with this matter.

No is the simple answer. You can only use the modem you are issued with. Any other modem will be registered to another user and NTL will not allow them to be transferred. Sorry

Re: Changing Cablemodem
If you've got a problem with a cable modem, the best thing to do is to ring faults to see if you can get a replacement.

I had exactly the same problem here with my ntl:200 modem, would lockup but a power cycle would bring it back. The length of time between lockups also varied just like yours. I believe I posted on here about it a month or two back.
I did in the end ring ntl about it after putting up with it for months, the very unhelpful guy in india told me that there was nothing wrong with it and that having to reset the modem 28 times in a month was perfectly acceptable. However although they told me nothing was wrong with it since I rang them the problem has disappeared completely, now been at least 6-8 weeks without a single lockup, so it would seem they did actually do something to fix it. However since they didn't say they did anything or admit to there being anything wrong I have no idea what that something was so not that helpful for you

Unfortunately, I've had it last 6-8 weeks before but it still happens (been like this since getting the modem 2.5 years ago when we moved house and for some reason got a new modem).
From memory the biggest difference between a 250 and a 200 is that there is better airflow around a 250 (am I wrong?), which leads me to think this may be a design flaw.
Does anyone know someone at faults (Southampton area) That will take me seriously if I say I want a replacement?
