Basically I wanted to avoid the router option for cost and simplicity, but it sounds like the router model you suggested will do me for £20...?
What about USB/Ethernet cables - does the NTL cable from wall go to router first then modem then PC/xbox simultaneously?
Is ICS setup not an easy option, I have Windows XPS2? Thanks

You will need the following.
Modem connected via ethernet lead to the wan port of the router.
There will be 4 x LAN ports on the router. Connect LAN 1 to computer and LAN 2 to the xbox, Both via Ethernet.
This will allow you to use both at the same time or 1 or the other.
If you use ics then you will always have to have the computer on when you need to use the xbox. This can turn out to be more costly in the long run than using a router.

Forget usb and to add to that you can no longer connect both usb and Ethernet at the same time on a sacm.
