Extremely slow browsing
in Leicester Le5 area, im pretty sure its related to this event in the cable modem:
Tue Dec 26 15:45:39 2006 Tue Dec 26 15:45:39 2006 161 Critical(3) 82000500 Started Unicast Maintenance Ranging - No Response received - ...
the count is 161 and rising every minute, it happened all of yday too, any ideas what could be causing this? i rang ntl and they just said theyll send out an engineer on sat, just bizarre how it randomly occured... i have one of the newer ntl:home 250 modems and am on a 4mbit serive (currently getitng <56k)
thanks

Re: Extremely slow browsing
Schoolkids on holiday thrashing their new PCs on the net?
(And probably unprotected against the nasties so spreading them around and filling the bandwidth?)

Re: Extremely slow browsing
Get them out to try to fix it.
They'll probably say its your PC. But if you test it after midnight and all is well at that time, then it can't be.
I had several engineer visits which did not improve things at all so I cancelled. Ultimately it seem the only options ntl can offer are live with speeds which are less than 10% of what you pay for, or else cancel.

Hope they sort it out for you.
I'd be interested in fact, because my problem had exactly the same symptoms as yours - but they couldnt/wouldnt fix it. So I never got to found out if I was just unlucky enough to get 3 successive incompetent engineers - or whether they really knew that their system was unable to deliver, but were just stringing me along.

Re: Extremely slow browsing
Well I have been having exactly the same problem for a week. One minute full 10 meg than in an instant 14.4K modem speed. Spoke to a really good english tech support guy which actually calmed me down somewhat. Run through the usual test asked me the usual questions then I told him I am a IT & Computer engineer so I do know what I am talking about when I say its not working. I had already taken my rig to another NTL house and it worked fine so it is definately a problem with my broadband. Got an engineer coming Tuesday (Hopefully).
Incidently my samsung box starts flashing usually at the same time and although it still works, whenever I am getting slow speeds the light is flashing.
