Moving modem to another room

I want to move my computer upstairs and leave one computer downstairs.

I use to have an NTL tv set top box in my room that is now gone, but the cables are still there(coaxial thing) and i thought i could connect my modem to that instead of the one downstairs..

1st Question: Im wondering if doing this will give me the same quality and speed of internet connection as i had downstairs?. Ive tried connecting my modem to it and the lights come on for Online.

2nd Question: Would it be possible to connect my downstairs coaxial into a second modem so I could get the internet down and upstairs? Becuase id rather not run wires through the house and this would be an easy solution and I dont need them networked. Currently they are networked only to share the internet.(Wireless doesnt work very well in my house, ive tried two different wireless routers in the past and neither worked well enough for me to give up wires(I actualy connect better to my neighbours for some reason) and wireless transmitters that ive tried for Sky/Tv/radio have never worked well either in my house.)

Re: Moving modem to another room

to the forums.

You could try the modem in the other location but you may find you could encounter problems. NTL reccomend that any work on their side of the modem is done by NTL. You may need things re-adjusting.

You can not hook up another NTL modem to the coaxial cable. If you required an additional modem you would have to pay NTL for two modems, plus they would have to come and set it up for you as each modems have to be registered by NTL.

Your best bet would be to leave the modem where it is and get yourself a cheap Linksys Wired Router. Then buy some cat5 ethernet cable and wire up from your router to the location of your other PC.

I hope you enjoy it here on the forum.

See HERE for a diagram showing how a router is placed on a network.
