Question want to use ethernet & usb for internet

hi there.
i'd like to know if you can use both the usb and ethernet connections on the ntl broadband modem to connect 2 computers to the internet.
at the moment if i connect the usb two one computer and ethernet to the other, the comp i connect first connects to the internet, but the second just says "limited connectivity."

surely this way should work because its exactly how you connect an xbox 360 & a computer at the same time, or am i wrong?

thanks
rick

Why not just buy a Wired router for £20 and save the hassle?

Re: want to use ethernet & usb for internet

to the forums.

To link two computers together, you will need a cross over Ethernet cable.
Standard cables linking an NTL modem to a computer or router are straight through Ethernet cables.

A router is a device that sits between your NTL modem and your computers.

You plug the router into the NTL modem. The router then handles your Internet and allows the computers cvonnected to the router to share the Internet connection.
yoiu can also share files through the router. It is your main network central point that handles Internet sharing and file sharing.

There exists wired and wireless routers. Both plug into the NTL modem.
A wired router means you connect to the router with ethernet cables from your computers network card to the router.

A wireless router connects to your computer without wires. It transmits the signal from the router to your computer's wireless card.

NTL connections need a standard cable router. It can be either wired or wireless.
Do not get an ADSL router as it will not work on an NTL connection.

You can pick up a router for about £30 and a wireless one for about £45.

Click on the picture below to see how a router could be connected up.....

Re: want to use ethernet & usb for internet

if i connect computer no. 1 to the ntl modem with a usb cable, & then connect computer 1 & 2 with a crossover ethernet cable, will computer 2 be able to use computer 1's internet connection?

if the above is true, should i use the Network Setup Wizard to connect the two computers together or something else?

Yes. You will need to use internet connection sharing which is very problematic in my experience.

You are better off spending £20 and getting a router and some ethernet cables (NON crossover). You'll probably gain that back in electricity by not having to leave the pc with the modem connected to it on for the internet to work (since with a router you dont need to).

Re: want to use ethernet & usb for internet

does any body know the difference between a 100baseTX and a 100baseT4 crossover cable? there are diagrams here: (go down the page a bit)
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art.../thistedx.html

from my knowledge, a 100baseT4 is faster than a 100baseTx, but how do i know if my ethernet adapter can support it? all i know is that i have a VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter.....i've tried looking on dxdiag but it doesn't give any info about the ethernet adapter.
please help.
thanks

Yep that is possible. On Computer 1 you need to go in Network Connections. Open up the properties for the LAN connection. Click the Advanced tab and tick the box to allow internet sharing.

Re: want to use ethernet & usb for internet

A Router is a better option as it will make the transition to extra pc's on the network much easier. If you go the extra couple of quid and get a wireless router you'll benefit from wifi access should you get a laptop later on.

I sawa gartner report that shows IT hardware being 70% cheaper by 2010 so laptops will be £100-200 then :-)

Your over complicating things Sanj.

100baseT4 is an early version of "Fast Ethernet" and seldom used anymore, as for the debate about which standard is faster its pretty much academic unless your going to be spending big money on your NICs and data devices, all of which pretty much makes your question about whether your adaptor will handle it redundant as you won't see any benefit either way.

If you want some bedtime reading then the IEEE standards website will give you more info than you'll ever need, and if you wait a week or so you won't have to pay for it
