Re: Broadband only at half speed

Now that someone has admitted that my Terayon modem is useless on the 10Meg package...........I have this question......how much of a rebate will I get from NTL ? as in theory they have been charging me £34.99 for a service they could not possibly provide.

That's funny. Coz my problem with slow speeds was worst in the evening - so I asked them to send an engineer then. They said "don't worry - he'll have all the tecnical data from our tests - so it won't matter what time he gets there"

Needless to say, he didnt have a clue when he arrived and left without fixing a thing.

I had 3 engineers, but no solution, so I finally cancelled. I'm just annoyed with myself for putting up with them for so long. I kept convincing myself that I was just unlucky - and that the next one would know his stuff. But they're all as bad as each other.

(One of them seemed flummoxed when he couldnt find the connections settings in Internet Explorer. I asked him whjat he was looking for and brought it up for him. He replied "Thanks, mate. I don't know much about computers." That may sound like a joke, but I swear that's what he said!!!)

1st 512K took 1859 ms = 275.4 KB/sec, approx 2269 Kbps, 2.22 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1859 ms = 275.4 KB/sec, approx 2269 Kbps, 2.22 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1828 ms = 280.1 KB/sec, approx 2308 Kbps, 2.25 Mbps
4th 512K took 1813 ms = 282.4 KB/sec, approx 2327 Kbps, 2.27 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2293 Kbps, 2.24 Mbps

I'm apparently on 4MB but notification area shows 10Mbps.

Sorry I'm new to this and have been searching.........

When you say notification area do you mean the taskbar near the clock is displaying 10mbit when you hover the mouse over it? If so then that's the speed of your network card and not the modem.

You can check your speed by going to http://192.168.100.1/ username/password both root. Under operational config you can compare your speed from the below list.

Note:- If you have an old Terayon Terajet modem or you get your broadband through a set top tv box then the above method won't work.

10mbit
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 512000

4mbit
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 4096000 bps
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 400000 bps

2mbit
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 2048000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 200000

Re: Broadband only at half speed

I would suggest a few things are checked before complaining of slow speeds.
If connecting directly through 100Mbit ethernet, please ignore this.

- If connecting via USB.. change to ethernet - you're much more likely to get your full transfer speeds.

- If you're using a cable router.. make sure that the WAN port (the one between your router and cable box) is capable of, and running at 100Mbit (pref full duplex) - 10Mbit is usually NOT sufficient for full 10Mbit.

- Wireless connections are also a tough thing to rule out as a cause - try direct ethernet connection for tests.

Re: Broadband only at half speed

Another thing to always check (I did'nt do this and it cost me weeks of frustration): make sure that nothing else on your computer is throttling your speed - in my case it was the ZoneAlarm firewall.

The best way to do this is to boot into Windows Safe Mode With Networking (tap F8 on startup to get the options). Then start your browser and download a big file or take a speed test. This will be a true reflection of the speed you're getting from your modem.
