weird NTL

For the past few weeks I keep getting this problem where my net seems to go really slow, lights go off on the modem (dl/ul) as if it is refreshing or something. I've phoned up NTL over it in the past and they also do the same checks and say my line is fine etc. I think the point im trying to make, is that for a 10mb line, it doesnt really seem to be living up to its name performance wise.

btw, spec if it helps with anything.

linksys wired router
xp home
3500+ 64
1 gig ram
plenty of hd space
gfx fine
etc etc.

Re: weird NTL

using a cable modem and a linksys wired router. its really annoying now. my download speeds are fine, but its just loading web pages and when i try and play games (logging in to anti-cheat software on some games wont work).

just got off the phone with tech support and got me to delete cookies/history etc. and then got me to try using a proxy in my lan settings, but none of that worked.

bit stumped as to what to try next.

Re: weird NTL

Ah, can you physically look at which model number is on your cable modem? It seems it may be cutting out when the going gets a little tough for it...

Re: weird NTL

An NTL 120, could be that it's finally giving up as it's an older modem.

Could someone else step in here and advise, not too sure on how to check the configs on a 120.

Your Receive Power Level is a little high but everything else looks ok can you see what qam you are on 64 or 256 if it is 256 this might be the trouble as i have seen a lot of these stop working after the qam change have you rang faults as you might need a tech to change out the modem

From the modem config page select status, then downstream status, the qam should be seen next to downstream modulation.

*bump*

the only joy i have had is to shut down, unlug modem/router and leave it for 5 mins then start up again. and that only had it going for about 30 mins correctly. u think getting a new modem might sort something out? how do i go about blagging a free one?

what do you mean blag a free one? You don't own the modem you "rent" it off NTL, so no you don't get a free one.

OK, if you are finding that web pages are loading when you are not requesting them, then you may well have some sort of Spyware / Malware problem.

A full anti-virus, Trojan and Spyware scan may be needed, even if you have such protection in place.
