NTL wireless help needed pls.

Hi there,

I got NTL installed yesterday.

I was supplied with a blue NTL "cable modem" with a coax connection screwed into the back.

IT all worked straight away (on a single PC).

I noticed that when connected direct via a CAT5 cable from the NTL box to my laptop - my wired LAN card gets an IP address direct from the box - but it appears to be a "public" ip address. (NTL DHCP?)

i.e 82.24.x.x

I worked out that if the coax wan't plugged in - it gave me a new IP address of 192.168.100.10

Using this info - i worked out that the actual IP address of the NTL "cable modem" was 192.168.100.1

I could then browse to that IP from IE, then login (user: root and password: root) and could see the NTL boxes diags \ connection speed etc.

I have a Netgear "adsl/cable" router (Ethernet as opposed to the RJ11 BT style socket) so i'm assuming this SHOULD work ok.

With this info - I thought i would easily be able to configure the Netgear for wireless without a problem.

The wireless router is a Netgear WGR614.

I have got it to the point where i can browse to both boxes wirelessly from IE.

BUT i can't get internet working wirelessly. I'm sure its to do with the fact i seem to get a public IP address when coax is screwed in, and a private one without it screwed in.

Can anyone help!? Point me in the right direction?

The NTL box is 192.168.100.1 (restricted and cannot be changed) - this changed to 82.24.x.x when coax is screwed in.

My Netgear router is 192.168.0.1 (LAN side) (with DHCP turned on) and 192.168.100.2 (WAN side)

If i have the laptops wireless is set to DHCP, i get an IP address of 192.168.0.10 (THE start of the DHCP range as configured via the Netgear)

I can then goto IE and login to both devices!

BUT WHY CANT i get Internet!!!????

PLEASE HELP!

Re: NTL wireless help needed pls.

Because it's an ADSL router which won't work on NTL cable broadband?

Re: NTL wireless help needed pls.

I have a Netgear WGR614 and the setup wizard did not detect the correct connection type for NTL: it was detected as a static IP/DNS type connection as opposed to DHCP assigned. I'm wondering if this is causing your problems.

What you need to do is browse to: http://www.routerlogin.net/basicsetting.htm and login as admin/password

Make sure that your Internet IP Address is set to "Get Dynamically from ISP"

And Domain Name Server (DNS) Address is set to "Get Automatically from ISP"

Re: NTL wireless help needed pls.

The basic problem is that you have the WAN side IP address of the router set to 192.168.100.2. What you should do is set the WAN side of the router to pick up an address via DHCP (as Uncle Peter says above). Then, when you power up the cable modem WITH the coax connected, then power up the router, the router WAN port will pick up a public IP address (82.24.x.x), and your PC will pick up a private IP address (192.168.0.10) from the router. The router then uses NAT (network address translation) to convert packets from your PC, send them out to t'internet, and route the responses back to your PC.

Re: NTL wireless help needed pls.

If that doesn't work you may have to clone the MAC of your network adaptor onto the router.
Did you power off everything when connecting the router? You should power down the PC and modem, connect, power up the modem, wait for lights to lock and settle, power up the router, wait for lights to settle/ lock, power up PC, browse to the url above and continue with setup.
