Sporadic PING & Upload times

Hi all,

I've got a problem which is bugging the hell out of me! A few weeks ago we raised a call with Telewest with our TV picture freezing a lot so they came out and swapped our box. They also done something on the Cable Modem (I don't know what as I was at work and the wife just said where it was). Since then, my ping times have been speradic and my upload is also not as good as it was. I play Pro Evo 4 online a lot and whenever I host a game against fellow UK players 99% of them say its lagging terribly with jerks, etc.

I went to pcpitstop to do some upload tests and I was getting between 180kbps - 240kbps (I'm on the 2mbit service with 256kbps upload). The fact I ran about 10 tests back to back an it jumped around so much worrys me. It is usually around 200 however it used to be on 246kbps constantly until the engineer came out.

My ping times were ranging from 30ms to 90ms as well when ppl were pinging me. I have messed around with the RWIN setting (ranged between 20000 and 35000, currently at 32000) and my pings are now around 25-40 which is what I would expect but the lag is still there on the upload and in the game

I've ran spyware checks (spybot and adaware), and a full AV scan with eTrust with latest definitions. I've also configured the NIC to 100Mbit Full Duplex only (although that shouldn't matter anyhow). The PC is clean although I'm tempted to do a rebuild anyway.

I've submitted a tracert and ping report to telewest with a description of the problem but don't know if there is anything else I can do.

Anyone here got any ideas that I can try?

Cheers

*Edit - also in Unreal Tournament 2004 when I first do a Internet search the ping times are all over 600ms, but when I refresh a few times they drop to around 50-60. Ping times in the game fluctuate as well

Ah someone'll tell you to change your upstream ID on your cable modem no doubt.

Check if you are getting packet loss, if you are getting a fair bit of it you need an engineer. If you're fine for packet loss implies that the upstream you're on is oversubscribed.

Re: Speradic PING & Upload times

No packet loss so I'll wait for the upstream prediction

I did ping another chap on Telewest 2Mb last night and the pings were ranging from <30ms to >100ms with 20 pings! Tracert was recorded too so I'll pass them on to Telewest when they respond.

I did check the power of the modem and that looked OK from what I read from the other thread. From memory it was 30, -3 and 40 for upstream.

Cheers

Re: Speradic PING & Upload times

They indeed have changed the upstream and its now working a treat.

Back on to my original IP address too so do they have different IP scopes for different upstreams?

Thought that was it, and no they don't.

Hrm can I just take this opportunity to note how many complaints re: Telewest on this board have been due to oversubscription on upstream, and how few complaints about ntl oversubscription there have been recently (I can't remember any for ages!)

There's a load of speculation on when Telewest will raise speeds everywhere. From where I'm sitting it seems ntl are in a better position to do it.
