I've just had the same problem as luminosity, with my daughters PC, AVG disposed of a trojan horse, and then the pc lost the connection, saying it could not renew the IP.
The suggestion to try WinsockFix by Bill C, was spot on.
The only drawback is that you NEED an internet connection to download it, a bit of a catch 22 situation if you only have 1 PCI. Lucky i have 2 PC's, so I could down load on 1 and tranfer to the other.

But Many thanks for the answer Bill, the problem had me banging my head for a while.
