Clogged node

Got recommnded this site by a work chum today who seemed to think a lot of it, so would appreciate advice.

Apparently I have a 'clogged node' caused by loads of students in the area using kazaa. According to the tech I spoke to "nothing can be done about it". I pay full whack for the so-called gold service and get a not very fast connection to stuff. Anybody know how, or if, this so-called download cap is enforced

I got told to 'get broadband medic' which seems to specialise in continually asking you if you have emptied your temporary internet files.

Regards

Re: Clogged node

to cable forum.

Regarding the so called cap, ntl occasionally write to heavy users, but in the past they will have been going way over the 1GB a day guideline, each and every day. It's some time since it is known that ntl had their last round of written warnings.

NTL's residential broadband services are a contended (shared) bandwidth system. Thus if many users are saturating the available bandwidth it can slow down for all that shares the same connection or UBR. However, many users frequently believe that they are entitled to make full use of their bandwidth, so the P2P users may be behaving, in their eyes, quite legitimately.

Your main hope is that ntl will one day resegment your UBR which effectively redistributes the users and can give more bandwidth.

I'm not quite sure as to how ntl's connections work but, an alternative to try, and if your speed is that slow anyway, you may have nothing to loose, and that is to request a speed downgrade from gold to silver. You may just find that moves you into a range of users who aren't saturating their connections to the same degree, so that conversely you get a better speed of service?

Discussion of capping has been extensively discussed many times on this forum, and is frequently emotive. I doubt the mods will want another thread to start, so do a quick search to see what else has been said.

You say your connection is 'not very fast'. How bad is it exactly?

well I did the robin walker simple speed test I got reccomended and it seemed to indicate everything was ok speedwise e'g 1.5 ish but it just not seem to be that rapid. It used to be really fast. I may go with Movedgoalposts advice and change level for a month or so. He may have a very good point with what he says there. Am not totally technical but am not a total novice either.

When you say doesn't seem to be that rapid, do you mean downloading, browsing or something else (e.g. p2p)?

If the speedtest comes out ok (most times of the day), it may be something with your computer/setup.

One thing you might try is to run the tests at www.pcpitstop.com. It may come up with some tweaks/advice that may speed up your connection.

Also, if you haven't done this, it never hurts to look for spyware, using adaware and spybot:search and destroy.

will check for those things you descibe. Generally I do nothing other than just look at webpages, so it might be no point me having the top speed at all

Re: Clogged node

try downloading and running the free version of ad-ware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ this should get rid of any adware. If not you could try specifying a different proxy server. Either may help....maybe!

You may not be wrong there I don't see why you should be on 1.5meg for browsing.

Seriously, if the speed test comes out allright (you want to try it a few times at different times of the day, especially when you experience slow browsing), it may well be your setup.

Oh, and don't be shy to come back here and ask for help should your problem remain. There's quite a few people here that are very knowledgeable in these things and are more than happy to help out.
