Windows ME/ IE 6/ NTL advice

I've recently posted about problems I've been having with a suspected virus which is corrupting text online, giving me unreliable internet access and making me unable to send attachments.

I've also been having problems with my outgoing NTL e-mail. So gavekthe tech support phone line a call. I told him that I keep getting the error message:

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. Subject 'Phone number', Account: '*********@ntlworld.com', Server: 'smtp.ntlworld.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10054, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F"

He asked which operating system and IE I use; I told him IE 6 and Windows ME. The operator then told me that was the problem, Windows ME and IE6 are not compatible and the source of all the grief I've been having with my computer. He says if I back-up everything, wipe the hard drive and re-install windows and never go higher than IE 5.5, then that will solve this.

My questions are:

1. Does this sound a little too extreme? Have others had this problem?

2. I'm a bit of a novice, and am not sure how to carry out the tasks he advised me to do (back-up, wipe hard drive etc.) This may be made more difficult by the fact I don't have my Windows ME disk to re-install.

Anyway, any advice or feedback would be gratefully received.

Andrew

That's rubbish. Its just that Microsoft don't support it on windows 98/Me. I think that's more likely what they meant. As for your other problem download spybot and Adaware from www.download.com Make sure you have them up to date also

Also go into add/remove and try the remove or fix option for IE6

Andrew

I have IE6 and ME and that's complete twaddle. They work together just fine.

Do as Defiant suggests and see if things improve.

Incog.

not quite rubbish... but i wouldn't have advised you to reformat.

There have been problems with win98/ME and IE6 but IE6 service pack 1 should work fine.

It does sound like a possible spyware issue though, so follow defiants advise and you should get it sorted then.

This is a server or network fault (usually server). It means your tcp connection is being reset.

Re: Windows ME/ IE 6/ NTL advice

I also run IE6 and windows ME with no problems! all microsoft updates and patches are upto date. you could also try installing spywareBlaster from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
this will help stop spyware from being installed in the first place.

Also download Spywareblaster

It prevents spyware from ever being installed on your system. Install this after you have run ad aware and spybot.

It can also be caused by an over enthusiastic firewall.

Using IE6 on Win98 (as I understand, it only installs on 98SE, not 98 original) IS best avoided.

Nothing could make WinME, possibly the worst OS from Microcrap, any worse.

Those of us using Linux or Mac OS were also spared.

this is a problem with the latest update for norton av, disabling email scanning should resolve the problem. win98/me is supported with ie 6sp1 anybody at ntl who tells you different is either going for the fob off or is ignorant of ntl policy on the matter
