help-upstream problems
i moved my cable modem a while ago. i cut connector of end of existing cable, shortened cable then was able to make a rough job (not tidy) of just slipping connector back on cable and keeping the cable stuck in connector with the help of an elastic band. that worked fine. no probs.
i went to maplins and got a replacment connector coz i wanted 2 make a neat job of it. i cut cable again so i could new connector on neatly. booted up modem all worked fine. however recently ive been having probs with my upload. i send a 600mb iso 2 a friend in usa via ftp or dcc on mirc and the file arrives but is corrupt. when the file he has is compared 2 the original file (with the help of par/par2 files) he has parts of the file missing. ive sent the file 2 another friend and he's had same problem so it must be something in my upload.
i upload a file 2 my ftp and downloaded it and it was corrupt. first steps i took was to take new connector off and check that the wires round edge of cable arent touching the wire in the middle i.e. positve touching negative and as far as i can see they arent. i put connector on and ive uploaded a file again and its slightly better but still serious problems.
i guess im gonna have 2 ring ntl. what is best to do? tell them i just got upload problems or admit that i changed connector. will engineer notice/will he be kind and let me off and just fix it 4 me. will ntl charge me 2 come out and fix this.

Re: help-upstream problems
Probably if the engineers notice there would be a callout charge (£50.00 or so)
Depending on your area and how the wiring is set up you might be able to get Ntl to send you a new length of wire for a set fee with the connectors on both ends so you can screw them onto the modem and wall socket.

Re: help-upstream problems
Or could you just buy a new fly lead from maplins?

from the residential terms and conditions:

9.5 Nobody other than an ntl representative may tamper, add to, modify or interfere with the Equipment in any way. As well as any other rights We may have, such action may result in our suspending the Services, terminating the Agreement and/or our retaining the whole or a part of any deposit.

there will be a charge if you need an engineer to sort out the problems. Unfortunately the amount you are charged is a lot less than the cost to ntl, so please don't mess around with it!!!

Re: help-upstream problems
Could you please PM me your IP address, I'm a little concerned that the same interference that's mangling your uploads may be getting onto the RF network and affecting the rest of your local area and want to check it out. Thanks
FWIW I'm not that bothered who you are, what you do with the connection, etc, I just care about protecting our network.

Re: help-upstream problems
The first 3 octets will do fine if you don't wanna give me the full thing - from that it'll be quite apparent if network issues are being caused from your handiwork.

As you seem somewhat reluctant to help me
Please give me at least the part of your DNS that gives something like sout1-3 or nott2-4 so I can check the SNRs on those sections?
I'll remind you before close of business tomorrow.
Sorry not going away you don't seem to appreciate how serious this is. Any garbage you put into the network gets amplified several times and on its way up to the uBR merges with the upstream signals from hundreds of other subscribers, and may be interfering with them.
Pretty please with sugar on top help me out here?

Re: help-upstream problems
sorry i havent replied. not deliberate. i have not been checking back with the thread because i found out that the problem i had was related to my router not my intereference with the ntl equipment
the tech guy asked me 2 disconnect router and try uploading, this worked fine for a 2mb file, i then tried a 15mb file and it worked fine. i have since sent abt 200mb 2 a friend in usa and it all went through fine.
the router has been playing up for a bit. sometimes it fails 2 renew the ip address. its a linksys befsr41.

Re: help-upstream problems
Shortening the cable will increase the strength of the signal over it. This may mean that your signal is too strong for the CM. That said the problem has been solved by other means.
Signal strength factors are only an issue if the cable length changes by factors of 10 meters as far as I understand.
