I think you're getting the seasons mixed up, season 1 was Blood and Sand, then there was the prequel season because of Andy Whitfield's cancer, now we're getting season 2 which is Vengeance. So have you saw season 1 or just a mix up with the names? Cause season 1 was awesome, so was Gods of The Arena.

Personally think Smallville came to a natural end. Can't see how you can have a series about the not-Superman years when he's working at the Daily Planet and the actor is 34 (almost the same as Christopher Reeve was in the first film)
