samsung stb scart audio problem

this is the setup:

pc with tv card-->scart lead-->vcr socket on stb

tv socket on stb-->scart lead-->tv

to get the tv to show the signal from the pc i have to put the samsung stb in standby mode, when i do that i get the picture from the pc but no sound. i've plugged the scart from the pc straight into the tv and the sound is fine so it isn't the pc. I've swapped the cables over (pc into tv & tv into vcr) and ended up with nothing from the pc and tv was fine (so vcr socket seems fine)

I can't have the stb using an rf lead as i need the to record from the stb onto the pc via the scart lead. Is there no sound pass through when the stb is in standby mode? or am i missing something?

Re: samsung stb scart audio problem

I suspect the TV card isn't putting the signal on SCART pin 8 to tell the STB that it's trying to play back. What model card is it?

Re: samsung stb scart audio problem

I can't really see from the Hauppauge website what connections that has, but I guess the composite out must be on a phono or DIN socket, and you must have a special lead that converts that to SCART.

So it's not surprising if there's nothing on the other end of SCART pin 8. (The STB expects 12 Volts on this pin if you are sending it 4:3 video, or 6V for 16:9 video).

Could you feed the composite out from the tv card direct to a second SCART socket on your TV, yet leave the VCR SCART on the STB connected to the video input on the card so you can record? May need to pop down to Maplins to buy some new cables.

Re: samsung stb scart audio problem

cables arent the problem, got more than i need or know what they are the problem is, 1 scart socket on the tv.

on the back of the card, its the vid/aud port that has a cable from there and goes into the vcr scart socket of the STB. I would be assuming there isn't a 12v output on the tv card to feed the 8th pin of the scart socket, did the old pace box not use this method?

Few ideas i've had, would I be able to wire something up so that there is a 12v line coming from the PSU in the pc, and into the 8th pin on the scart adaptor? (with some wire surgery) What (if anything) could/will happen if i get the pin wrong? Also, what about the current running down it?

If it is indeed the 12v pin missing, is the picture still passed through by default?

Re: samsung stb scart audio problem

You could cause a serious bang if you got the pin-out wrong i would imagine!

Re: samsung stb scart audio problem

You could damage the STB if you put 12V down the wrong pin. Anyway, this isn't a simple solution, as the 12V should only be present when you are playing back from the PC, otherwise you'd not be able to watch the STB output direct on the TV.

As it's only the sound you are missing, could you just bypass the STB for the audio signals. Got an amp you could feed them into? (Or even the PC speakers - yuk!)

Re: samsung stb scart audio problem

surely the stb output would take preference to the other scart socket? i was thinking of taking 12v off a molex connector (hd/cd connector) and putting it on a pci slot style bracket on the back of the case and mod the cable to connect into that.

can't really connect it to anything else as that'd defeat the purpose of watching it on the tv :p

No. If the other socket say 'yoohoo - I'm here', it takes precedence.

Re: samsung stb scart audio problem

as an update, i went to maplins and got a scart to 2 scart cable, works fine once i tell my tv card to send the input back out down the output wires

so now its stb-->pc-->tv, which is a pain to leave the pc on to watch tv
