Unable to get terrestrial TV through cable

hi there, I have a cable&wireless box installed in a new house (which i think is now supplied by NTL) and no roof top aerial. Having previoulsy had NTL digital in my parents house, i know that we could also get normal channels (1-5) through the box. is this still the case, and if so why doesnt it work at the moment, and is it possible to get the cable reactivated so i dont have to get a rooftop aerial for my house(Im only a poor student)

Thanks in advance.

Do you subscribe to any of the cable plans because if you don't your signal will be blocked.

Sorry

we dont subscribe at the moment, just moved in. Our friends in a house down the road are in the same situation - no rooftop aerial and also havnt subscribed, but they can get perfect signal through their box.

Re: Unable to get terrestrial TV through cable

Are you trying to get channels through the STB? Was the STB left in the house you are now in or did you bring an old one? If its one of your own and its from a different area then it won't know what frequency to look at to find its channels, so it won't get anything. If its from the current house then theres a chance that ntl have disconnected the RF feed to your house when the last people cancelled their account.

Re: Unable to get terrestrial TV through cable

If theres no channels with the cable feed direct to the TV then the feed is disconnected. I'm assuming you told the TV to search for channels?
No feed, no channels, STB or not!

Re: Unable to get terrestrial TV through cable

If you connect directly theres a chance you could put noise from your TV onto the local network.
You would need either BB or TV before they re-connect in the street cab. If theres a spare feed, its unusual to disconnect.
Have you checked the wall box to make sure nothings loose etc.

if their going to the same cab as your house, then it seems the cable is disconnected in the cab for yours and so no your not going to get what you want.

student or not your going to have to pay, eather for the basic ntl tv package or in your case your probably better getting yourself a DVB-T usb tv card and cheap tv arial and some cable.

then having a word with someone near you with a ladder or perhaps you can get access to the loft if your well in range of the transmitter so as to get a good digital signal.

for instance, im using a cheap £12 yagi arial from argos inside my loft and get a good picture and you get more channels than analogue or from the ntl feed anyway without paying them.

if you go for the DVB-T card, get yourself one that has BDA drivers as then you can use the likes of
DVB Web Scheduler http://www.digtv.no-ip.com/webscheduler/ and jtvlan to stream the tv over a wireless lan for instance
