The Red Dot

Leading on from the HDtv thread...

How can anyone describe the red dot as 'an unacceptable intrusion'??? What does it do? Burst into your lounge, running round with no pants on, shouting at the top of it's voice and flicking the V's at you?

Methinks that there are some people who take their TV viewing far too seriously....

Re: The Red Dot

Personally I can't see the difference between it and the Sky One, MTV etc. logos.

Maybe a bit flashier and louder but not enough to make me threaten major violence to Ntl/Sky/BBC or anyone else.

Re: The Red Dot

Some people don't wish to have them on their recordings? (which they then flog to other people)

Personally I couldn't care less, its not hard to press the back button.

Re: The Red Dot

It certainly bothered me, but kind Sky recently introduced an option on their box's that let you turn it off automatically after 30 seconds.

Never notice it now to be honest.

Its more of an intrusion than the channel logos because it is essentially a big red dot which catches your eye a hell of a lot more than a semi transparent logo.

Re: The Red Dot

Also it flashes on and off every few minutes 24/7 on all BBC channels. It's a big label which displays the message PRESS RED for 30 seconds and randomly appears several times an hour and has done so since the new software was rolled out. It didn't do before the new software appeared. Freeview and Sky have provided a way to get rid of it but ntl hasn't, despite saying they would and telling Radio Times that they would.

Re: The Red Dot

It's not nearly as annoying as the fact that on Sky One Sky have decided that they will promote programmes using images/ text at the bottom of the screen *during* other programmes.

Noticed it during the simpsons the other day... no need for it if you ask me!!

I prefer the banner at the bottom of Sky news, this makes it impossible to see anything in this, just how i like it!

Agreed Chris. I seem to recall BBC1 doing it as a trial but people were so annoyed with it, as they are with the PRESS RED intrusion, that they stopped doing it.

Xan anyone who works for ntl please update us on the situation as ntl was quoted in Radio Times saying "they are working on a solution" concerning the PRESS RED problem, something which both Sky and Freeview have managed to sort out.

Re: The Red Dot

I still fail to see why ntl can't fix the problem as it is a problem with ntl. The BBC only inflict us with this junk when you first change to that channel and at the start of programmes with PRESS RED functions available. With ntl it appears on all BBC channels eveyrtime a new programme appears, regardless of whether the programme is on that channel. this is why it appears every few minutes, sometimes as often as every 5 minutes, because programmes start across the BBC every few minutes. This only happens with ntl, and ntl has said that it is a fault with the ntl software, and didn't happen until the new software was rolled out. It doesn't happen with Sky and doesn't happen with Freeview and I would assume not with telewest either.

As I've said, I now use my Freeview box to watch BBC channels but don't have that option with BBC Plarliament and when I watched the 1966 Election highlights programme last night the PRESS RED icon appeared at 10, 10.30 and 10.35, which was when programmes started on other channels. I just wish that Freeview broadcast BBC Parliament.

However, with regard to ntl, as they have been quoted as working on a solution to this intrusion, I would be grateful if somneone from ntl can update the forum on the situation regarding this pelase.

Re: The Red Dot

Three days to go and I guess I'm going to be forced to have the PRESS RED appear every 5 minutes if I tape the 1966 Election results programme rerun. I keep hoping for a miracle that ntl will fix the problem but I am giving up hope. Oh I wish I ahd Sky...
