World Cup on VOD????

From http://www.pvrwire.com/2006/03/14/nt...cup-on-demand/

Rumors are starting to circulate about NTL/Telewest's plans for services during the Fifa World Cup during the summer.

The company has already announced a new broadband website featuring World Cup news and competitions, in addition to some soccer-related on-demand movies and songs, but when questioned about the availability of World Cup matches on-demand via the cable television service, they wouldn't confirm or deny any firm plans.

And, there's this from http://www.techdigest.tv/2006/03/ntl_does_the_wo.html:

NTL has announced it is offering the World Cup on demand this summer - but what is actually on demand is still very much open to question.

The cable giant is introducing a new broadband website for ntl customers, featuring World Cup news, views and competitions, along with a new international calling tariff from 1st June to make calling participating countries cheaper. But the most interesting part of the announcement relates to the content available on demand.

So far, NTL has promised football films at your fingertips plus a library of football's finest songs to download, if you want to create your own pre-match build-up. When pressed about the possibility of full matches on demand, the company were unable to confirm if this would happen - but would be offering more information in the coming weeks relating to their on demand service.

We wait and hope. More news as and when we have it.

Oh please, NTL-VOD god, give us poor VOD-less souls VOD already!!!

Re: World Cup on VOD????

You're missing the point.

Some of these games are on from 5pm, when most people will still be at work or coming home from work.

If they put the 5pm games on VOD, that means I can watch that whole game later in the evening or even later on in the week.

Ah, fair enough. Personally I wouldn't dream of letting something as mundane as work get in the way of the footie

I can imagine what its going to be like on the roads during rush hour:

BLEEP BLEEP!!! "Get off the fracking road!!! England are playing in a minute!!!"

Still, its nice to know they're listening to me - sort of - I've suggested before that NTL could blow away Sky Sports Interactive by just putting all of the week's Premiership games on VOD. That, IMHO, would be far easier for NTL to set up than waiting for Sky to write the code for a NTL version of Sky Sports Interactive.

Re: World Cup on VOD????

If they are offering the games on the VoD service will the Telewest TV Drive people get them in HD?

If they do and Sky haven't got round to launching the HD stuff by then it would be a big two fingers up to them.

But why would you want to watch a footy match several days after it's been on when you would no doubt know the result/what happened etc?

The BBC have not announced any plans to show the World Cup in HD, although they do have HD trials running/about to start.

It's got nothing to do with Sky, it's down to whether the BBC can negotiate with the broadcasters that are filming/broadcasting in HD.

Sure, I could record the games - but why do that if its on VOD? I'm sure the people who watch EastEnders and other soaps on VOD could tape those episodes too - but chances are, they don't.

Why not?

I and millions of other footy fans know the results of games at 4.50pm on Saturday (and even know who scored, when and how) - but that still doesn't stop people from watching Match of the Day almost six hours later. Or watching highlights of those games the next day on Sky Sports / MoTD 2.

Even if NTL only had yesterday's games on VOD, that would be great. They would be daft not to take advantage of their VOD capability during one of the biggest sporting tournaments in the world, IMO. Plus its good publicity for them and Cable TV in general.

And half the time Ntl forget to tape it too - well so people are reporting on here, so you still may not get it. Rather rely on me setting the DVD recorder/Sky+/VCR than someone at Ntl.

Again only if they manage to go through it without missing a game! Can you imagine the uproar from Ntl customers expecting a game and they forget to set it. Oops.
