Teletext
I have NTL cable TV, telephone and broadband. I can't get teletext at all. Does anyone know how to make it work?

Re: Teletext
The only way I could get it to work was to attach an Aerial to the Aerial socket on the TV, then tune channel's 1 to 5.

Re: Teletext
Ntl does not carry teletext on its digital service. It is removed during the encoding to digital.

Not entirely true.
The standard channels (1-5) are recieved via Digital Terrestrial (aka Freeview) at each headend, before being remultiplexed and broadcast over the cables to the local area. There is no teletext stream available via DTT, so the stream is not sent over the ntl cable. However, certain channels do have teletext available - UKTV Gold is one such example. This is because they are received centrally in either Langley or Bromley from satellite or landline transmissions, where teletext streams are provided.
Where the channel provider makes the stream available, it is carried on ntl. BBC/ITV/C4/five do not have teletext streams available on any digital service.

Easy to be miss informed, I was advised that channels that are encoded into digital (possibly pre ntl) do not make it out the other side with teletext intact.
This was from training with senior network techs on principles of digotal TV transmission. It was 3 years ago so migt be a little rusty.
What really surprised me was that if the original raw digital conversion was 250mbs the encoding reduces it to 1-2mbs. Talk about efficient.

That's true. On analogue the teletext is encoded in the picture (well, just off the top of it). These video lines don't get encoded into the digital picture, so the teletext gets sent seperately on digital. The STB reinserts it into the video when it's regenerating the analogue signal.
