DVD Recorders

Our local Tescos were selling sub-£100 DVD recorders last week. Wasn't tempted to buy one because I don't have the readies available.

However, I wondered whether these cheapo DVD recorders can do the business for recording TV coming thru the NTL decoders, so that I can watch programs at a later time?

Haven't used one before, nearest I can come is a VCR which I assume provides broadly similar recording capability.

I suppose what I'm asking is whether the signal on the decoded side of the Pace box is a standard video signal, or whether it's encrypted in a way which would mess up any means of recording the signal.

Re: DVD Recorders

On my DVD Recorder I can set the recording quality basic to high quality! Basic seems a bit blocky if its fast action but it does for me. I would say quality wise would be the same as VHS! On the plus side you don't get those annoying tracking issues!!

Re: DVD Recorders

the decoded signal is completely standard & can be recorded onto any device that can record 'normal' TV.

I'm not sure about 'Pay per View' services, though.

Some pay per view is broadcast in macrovision, like sky box office, screws up the recording if you try, maplins did do a great decoder, that removed the macrovision signal, but sky forced them to withdraw all the kit.

Non macrovsion stuff, like NTL's signal will record on any video/dvd recorder OK
