Can you confirm?

There is a thread on Virgin forums that runs to 44 pages(from last year) about Sammy V+ boxes causing intermittent drop off of sound when viewing HD channels only. Now I have this problem and it's starting to bug me,so my questions are
1 Can anyone confirm it is a sammy problem?
2 Has anyone else had or still have this problem?
3 If I got Tivo would that cure the problem?

Re: Can you confirm?

To answer 2, I have had picture and sound drop for the last week both on HD channels and subscription channels. Had to reboot the box 4 times over the week. Cannot say whether this is a Samsung only problem, although my box is Samsung.

Re: Can you confirm?

Thanks Mark.My problem is only with HD, not SD channels and I've had the problem since Christmas which is when I got a Yamaha AV receiver to get the most out of the HD channels.

Re: Can you confirm?

This problem happens because of jitter (timing variations) in the Dolby signal broadcast on some HD channels. Although the jitter is within the range permitted by the Dolby spec, not all amps can cope with it.

It doesn't happen with the SA V+ because it regenerates the Dolby timing itself rather than passing it through from the incoming channel. I've not seen any reports of it happening on TiVo either.

Thanks spiderplant for that explanation.I'll put a call in and see if they will swap the sammy over for the Tivo.

Twice recently I've had no picture/sound on both SD/HD channels when switching on the tv. Only thing showing was the programme bars. Had to reboot my Sammy box each time to resolve the problem.

Re: Can you confirm?

Well I put a call into CS to try and get my Sammy changed over to a Tivo, they said yes but it will cost you an extra £3.50 a month.I said no thanks my monthly bill is already too high and that was that.So after a day or so I rang the "thinking of leaving option" and explained my problem with the sound on HD channels and that changing over to Tivo might cure the problem. After a minute or so she confirmed that it would,I then said I don't won't to pay any extra, she then checked what package I was on and came back to me and said we have a deal for you and it's a win win.I get Tivo for free and £5 knocked off my monthly bill.Obviously I have to pay the £49.95 installation charge, and also there is a new 12 month contract and that this deal lasts 2 years. She said ring back and see if there are any more deals when this runs out.All in all I was pleased that I put the call in,now I just have to get my head round Tivo when it comes on Wednesday and hope it doesn't give me too many headaches
