Given the technology platform, there's no reason why that can't be the case, so again it boils down to maximising profit.

I know it's probably been discussed before, but I'd seriously consider giving my business to any company that let me choose my package on a channel by channel basis. How many of us have channels in our package that we never watch? For example, Grim Jr is now 22 and our days of Spongebob Square Pants are over (thankfully) but we still have all the children’s channels. Grim Jr announced some 6 months ago that she was 'staying at her boyfriends tonight' and hasn't spent a night here since, but we still have all the 'thump thump' music channels.
Mrs Grim has often said she'd consider adding Sky Movies if we weren’t paying for all the stuff we don't watch. Being an avid Bond fan I'd subscribe the upcoming Sky Movies Bond channel if it was available on it's own. I've retired from F1 as I like to watch the whole race and felt subscribing to all the unwanted sports channels to get the F1 channel would mean I'd also have to go out and get the word MUG tattooed on my forehead.
There is a gap in the market that's waiting to be filled . When I go to the supermarket later today I'll get what Mrs Grim has put on the list. Sainsburys wouldn’t dream of saying 'if you want ketchup you must also buy anchovies and ginger beer' but we the customer let Sky and VM get away with such an approach. How long would the iTunes store last if you had to buy something from Jedward and The Chipmunks with the latest thrash metal track.
I could go on, but I think I've made my point. That there are many potential customers out there who would sign up if the could just buy the channels they wanted and not find themselves lumbered with (and paying for) all the 'useless' stuff.
Cheers
Grim

The problem with pick n mix channel selection is that lots of the channels have a very low number of viewers, and wouldn't survive on their own without being in part of a bundle and in the end our choice would be further reduced

Then we're down to quality and not quantity, which is surely what it's all about?
