Post Re: Current TV on VM TV that is the question

I haven't had a chance to view the closing speech yet but maybe Al didn't know the exact details of the demise of Current TV in the UK and included cable companies among the accused because that is how it would be in the US. I must admit that I still don't understand how it all works here in the UK in terms of who carries what and how it's paid for. It does seem as though a channel has to be carried on satellite before it can appear on cable.

I suppose that, if Virgin Media had wanted to, they could have continued to carry Current TV independently of BSkyB. However, they probably couldn't afford to pay for it in the same way that Sky had been as one of their package channels and, as VM still has a limited coverage area compared to the satellite carriers, there would have been a disproportion between the target audience and the cost of carriage.

Similarly, Current TV could have continued to broadcast Free-to-Air on various UK/Ireland and European satellite systems but then they would have had to rely entirely on advertising revenue to cover their costs.

You never know, there may still be opportunities in the future to have Current TV return to our screens so I wouldn't be in a desperate hurry to close this thread just yet.

Maybe Al Gore should have checked his facts before making the speech, if Virgin Media make Current TV a standalone Premium channel, would it have survived on VM at least?

What could most likely happen is that the Current TV programmes might end up on VOD or the BBC
