How to Determine if Sound Output is 5.1
This must have been raised before, but can't find a post.
Is there any way to determine what type of sound channels are present in a channel? For example, Freeview always shows all the data in an info bar, so on BBC HD is it usually 5.1, most other channels 2 CH. Maybe Sky do this as well.
Virgin do not provide any info like this, in fact the programme guide is minimal. My audio goes to a 7.1 home cinema via optical and when watching a programme, it is good to know if the sound should be set to use all speakers all just mono/stereo. Quite often play around with it and I can't figure out what it is. My BD system cannot show me.

Re: How to Determine if Sound Output is 5.1
This is one of the reasons I chose my Denon amp. It has two little speaker layouts - one input format, one output format. So I can see stereo come in, be processed by PLII and go out as 5.1. Or see at a glance whether I've got 2.0, 2.1 (quite common!) or 5.1 coming in on a HD channel.
Do you not have any way of displaying 'input format' on your amp? My old DSP-A5 used to be able to display DOLBY DIGITAL 3/2 or DOLBY DIGITAL 2/0 by hitting a button, thus telling you the number of channels in the stream.

Doesn't your amp show what is being input/output?
eg. when on a HD channel my surround amp will show either Dolby Digital 2.0 for stereo or Dolby Digital 3/2.1 for full surround.

I have an Onyko A/V reciever and it displays the audio it is being input by my TiVo by pressing tye display button on the Onkyo remote control and watching the display on the front of the receiver.

Re: How to Determine if Sound Output is 5.1
I listen to stereo broadcasts of film and TV shows in multi channel. So, if my Yamaha 1900 displays 'PL11 Movie' it's stereo; if it says 'Dolby Digital', it's 5.1 as it automatically switches, depending on the audio input.

Re: How to Determine if Sound Output is 5.1
Thanks for replies. I have a Samsung HT-C6930 BD 7.1 system and it does not display what sound is coming in from audio only inputs. I can tell on a DVD/BD as it comes up on the TV screen, but there does not seem to be any way to do it when the video is from another source.

If you plug a composite (yellow rca) cable into the Video output on your amp, into a composite on your telly and choose that screen as input you should be able to press a "display button" on your amp remote which will show what is going on???

Good idea, but I can only get a info display from the amp when actually playing a disc. Grr.

Re: How to Determine if Sound Output is 5.1
Well, I've just skimmed through the manual and it's freaking *useless*. What happens when you press the PLII button on your remote when you're listening to something on the optical input you know is 5.1?

Re: How to Determine if Sound Output is 5.1
Ta for looking. The PLII button just cycles through Stereo/Movie/Music/ProLogic/Matrix sound modes, all of which are available no matter the actual input. God, it's annoying that I can't display what's coming into the amp.

Ho hum. That's the problem with HTIB - less flexibility. How does it behave for the sources connected via HDMI?

Re: How to Determine if Sound Output is 5.1
So .. back to the original question then .. because I'd like to know too!
Why don't VM display this sort of info on the screen?

Re: How to Determine if Sound Output is 5.1
I'm probably showing my ignorance here, but presumably you would hear if it's 5.1.
If not, what's the point of 5.1?

Re: How to Determine if Sound Output is 5.1
On the TiVo it tells you in the info section. As V+ is no longer available I doubt they will upgrade the software now. However TiVo is a fantastic upgrade.

Yes , of course! .. if the amp is set up properly.
I think what the OP means is , it would be nice to know whats being transmitted via the VM on screen display.
