They don't charge for the TV Guide app, the Virgin Mobile My Account app or the VM Short iPad app. TiVo don't charge for the iOS app nor the Android app
So why do you think VM would charge for the TiVo app?

In the grand scheme of TiVo users? I personally reckon it is a lot less than you think

No, but the fact Vista was incompatible (for a few weeks) with any phones running Windows Mobile isn't a good sign for MS.
But, I digress.. While VM may make efforts to ensure that the major apps are compatible with Tivo (as, I am sure, Microsoft do with the various versions of Windows), it's not really their responsibility to do this.
However, to suggest that any company can ensure that their software is compatible with all versions of all apps it might connect to (remember, people are often not that good at installing updates, so the company may end up having to support several versions of an app) is, frankly, stupid. There is no way on earth that any company (not even companies the size of MS and Apple) have the resources to do that.

As a proportion of tivo users, I agree. But, looking at a few forums and judging from what the Virgin tivo chap said on the phone, it's not insignificant. Clearly, VM/tivo think sufficient people are (and will be) interested to spend money to R+D the app.
I'm just pleased that this appears to be a temporary setback, I've got quite used to controlling tivo with the app.

Re: Virgin Media TiVo iPad app
I’ve had the VM TiVo for nearly a year now, the first nine months were painful. You could see the potential but Virgin’s implementation was shameful from the beginning.
Along came the 15.2 update and the light at the end of the tunnel was getting stronger then clever brighter sparks got the US Buddy app working, I was sunbathing.
Frankly this app makes the VM TiVo a product of considerable awe and I love it and my TiVo to bits. However, stable it’s not (I have no idea about the stability of the android apps). It will regularly lock my box into a freeze and more regularly make the normal remote inoperable, rebooting the only option.
Despite the problems I would love to keep using the US Buddy app, I can on the other hand see why Virgin’s 3rd party blocking manoeuvre has been implemented.
It’s Virgin that would be picking up the tab if unsupported apps start killing boxes they just don’t want it to be so easy. Yet with over a quarter of a million users I can’t see it being long before another jail brake’s made!

Re: Virgin Media TiVo iPad app
The Tivo App has been updated to version 1.6.1 to fix miscellaneous bug fixes. Happy days?

Very!
Got home to find my box had updated - despite my weak attempt to prevent that by unplugging the coax last night. Checked the app and it wouldn't connect.
Logged onto US iTunes, updated and it's back in business!
They seem to have fixed the left gestures pane too. Haven't found any other improvements yet, but investigating now!

Re: Virgin Media TiVo iPad app
So you are saying you had the new firmware and the you upgraded the us iPad app and you can still connect to the TiVo? If this true then we will have to keep it quiet otherwise virgin will issue another fix.
Thanks

Re: Virgin Media TiVo iPad app
Surely they wouldn't do that. Who would that serve?
Ok, I retract my last post. I completely made it up.
