The hard drive runs all the time at the moment. But as others have said, TiVos do tend to be very quiet.

The next TiVo update you may have to add a V+ style noise effect that some people are clearly missing

I'm currently have a torch balanced on top of the TiVo shining through a blue Quality Street wrapper left over from Christmas, and my cat sat next to it under orders to purr constantly. If I squint its almost like it was 2010.
