V+ Surround Sound -- HDMI

Hi all,

Normally I would think this is my subject but I am struggling with this one

My plan is to cut down the number of cables in my install at home, I am now lucky enough to have a HDMI1.4 Yamaha AV Amp that replaces my old analgue video Amp.

In my old setup I could get surround sound from the V+ using the optical output cable, but I have had no joy at all getting multi-channel sound out of the V+ using HDMI.

SA V+ by the way

Anyone else had similar issues or is it a case of;
1 try a bit harder with the Yamaha options.
2 Re fit the optical cable

Any thoughts...........

Re: V+ Surround Sound -- HDMI

Have you got the V+ set to HDMI override. I did this to get sound down the optical output so would need to stop the override.

Re: V+ Surround Sound -- HDMI

Only the HD channels broadcast 5.1

Some only 2.1

All other none HD channels are stereo only.

Not totally true stereo carries Dolby prologic encoded in the stereo (if available).

Completely subject to content and assuming it doesn't get lost in the audio compression, and of course, only if your amp supports it - bare in mind if you are connecting the optical to your TV, some TVs will strip it out

Re: V+ Surround Sound -- HDMI

Well I have re-connected the Optical cable, not really a hardship, and the Amp is now quite happy that it is getting a Dolby Digital signal. I have recorded some bits from BBC HD which do have "proper" sound so I have a controlled repeatable test.

I might try a total power down cold reboot of the V+ to see if that makes any difference to the HDMI connection.

I got a Samsung A/V amp on Saturday and had the pleasure of having to move my wiring for several items.

Just to say that my V+ box is connected to the amp via HDMI and the amp is showing dolby digital for some HD channels (BBC ESPN football).

On channels like BBC and ITV the amp shows as dolby digital pro-logic.

What was slightly odd was that on the pre-match build up on ESPN HD the amp showed pro-logic.I was disappointed as I expected it to be full DD, but as soon as they switched to the stadium the amp changed to DD.

Re: V+ Surround Sound -- HDMI

You should get sound with HDMI only, you may have to enable an hdmi channel on your amp

Re: V+ Surround Sound -- HDMI

Update following more tea and concentration !! Operator Error, What I thought was a general setting for the Amp had to applied to each input. The HDMI input I was using for the V+ was on a pre-defined sound field not a decoding setting. Now it is set up properly all is working fine.
