3d tv
I saw a 3D film on Saturday at the cinema and there was an advert for Sky 3D - coming soon
Does anyone know if Virgin are planning to broadcast 3D TV?

Re: 3d tv
Well am sure VM will have been testing this behind closed doors, however they may not see the market for it yet as 3D TV sets are only just starting to appear.

Re: 3d tv
VM have said they will do 3D TV, but as a VOD option, not the channel that Sky are planning.
VM say they are 3D ready which I guess they are... they have already shown they can do it in their Oxford Street store a few months back.

polarised technology that still needs glasses but not the much-derided red and cyan lenses.]

from the link not good Active shutter is the best and its supported by the best TV manufacturers.SKY insist they are going to broadcast both lets hope VM do to or you will have to buy a LG or Hitachi TV and not a Sony Samsung or Panny lol

The broadcast makes no difference to the tech used to view.
The HDMI standard for 3d works with both. As long as you are capable of generating two seperate frames then if viewing needs polarised or shutter is entirely down to the tv set. In both cases the STB will be sending the same signal, the difference then is in the processing done by the TV.

Re: 3d tv
come back a yard. They are totally different polarized images are both on the screen the same time active shutter are one after the other the broadcasts will have to be totally different surely?
The other main difference is resolution for 2 images to be on displayed at the same time you lose half the horizontal resolution with active shutter its all full res

RealD shows the entire frames seperately polarised one after the other, so it's not a simple case of "polarisation = half frame".
That comes down to the implementation of it, you can have half and half both displayed simultaneously, you can have full frame displayed alternately.
This makes no difference to the STB.
The data it's sending is the same, it's sending two frames, or one frame plus depth information.
The TV can then scale that to do 1/2 and 1/2 if it wants, or alternate them to do full frame.
The STB doesn't care, it's putting out a 3d signal, how it's dealt with is up to the medium displaying it.

Re: 3d tv
The Sky box sends out two half res images side by side, the screen then does its magic to create the 3D effect.

Re: 3d tv
but Active shutter tech does not use half res it uses full res images one after the other

There isn't the bandwidth in broadcast to do fullframe 1080 3d, it require twice the bandwidth of normal HD. That's why it outputs at half res.
Again, the TV can scale and do what it likes with the frames, that the stb is outputting half res doesn't mean the TV has to display it, it can scale it up and display the frames alternately.
This is the entire point of the HDMI 3d spec, it's entirely platform agnostic. It just gives the capability to send 2 frames, how those frames are processed and displayed is entirely down to the display device.

I've seen it. It works. It works bloody well.
TV is all about fooling the eyes and brain, 3D HDTV does just that.
